Recently had to replace my wireless router/modem and because I had to rush to make a flight, I neglected to secure the network. After being away for three days, I immediately secured the network. I live in a multi unit condo and and there are dozens of other networks both secured and unsecured. My question is can someone use my network to make illegal downloads and if so, will my internet provider see me as the illegal downloader or can the actual illegal downloader be traced?

Yes they can use your network. Best to secure it and that isn't always 100% foolproof... Hackers can still get in. But it makes it a little harder for the everyday person. They trace the download back to your ISP and then to your IP addy that you have. The ball is in your court even if a neighbor does it.

Use WPA TKIP and you'll be fine. It's not easy to crack WPA, buit it can be done in a few hours or less if the passkey is weak. Use a combination of upper case, lower case, numbers and special characters...at least 8-10 characters long. Don't bother with WEP security as it can be compromised in just several minutes.
