Ok my laptop is finally running and in which I am on. I neesd to know why the network is so ridulously slow. like dial up. Does anyone know anything that might speed up the resolving of domain names? It seems like a problem which is common.

Try OpenDNS and see if you get any relief.

It caches the resolved DNS in a remote super fast server so that you don't have to do it each time you visit a site.

This service was launched one year ago and I wonder how I ever did without it! I hope you find it the same.

Commmon causes of network slow downs in no particular order of importance:
    1. malware/spyware
    2. network misconfigurations
    3. isp has some problems
    4. client software misconfigurations
    5. own hardware failing (router, modem, network card, cables)

    Solutions:
    1. post HijackThis log in the Reemoving Spyware & Viruses forum here along with detailed explanation of your problems and with some stats such as download/upload speed test results.

    2. check your networking settings on comp.

    3. call isp.

    4. check browser settings.

    5. reset router to defaults and reconfigure; power modem off & on; check any cables.

    1) run spyware removal programs - several of them. All find different things
    2) check the settings on the wi fi in the router

    - change the channel from channel 6 to channel 11 or a start
3)make sure router is high and uncluttered
    4) what are transmission settings in the router ?
    speeds , try changing mru
    5) If the network cards are all g then set to g only
    - if you have one b in the g network it will bring the wireless network down to b speeds ( including wireless printers)
    6) if the network is open you may have an intruder

network magic will build a map

    - wi fi generally goes at 1/2 of stated speeds as a max. The speed rapidly decreases with distance ( after about 30 feet it starts to drop off like a stone)

    Exactly what the doctor ordered.

The DNS server was not resolving and after changing to this open DNS low and behold pages came up rapidly. I thought of this being some network issue. but strangily enough the DNS server was not being obtained automatically. I could not possibly have had any spyware on a fresh install of windows. Thanks for the help yet again.

DeeLay, I'm glad it was the answer for you. Thanks for the feedback so others may benefit. It's one of those cases where you would be looking a long time for some fault in your system when none really existed. ;)

Don't underestimate how quickly spyware can get on to a PC if you are not careful.

    agreed

But I couldn't even get on the network to get an installed. I do understand that spy / adware can disrupt the network even in gaming. but in this instance I was having several issues with the installation of windows and a toshiba satellite s504-5005 everything from the installation hanging up to complete crashing and also incomplete installation. but I got the system finally installed with a seem to be working copy but it turned out it was not obtaining an address until after about 5 to 10 minutes. But very true and well deserved advice on all aspects. thanks to all for the tremendous help. I am glad this site exists!
