    Hi,

I've been running Windows 7 on my laptop for about 4 months now. At home, I connect to my network via wired/wireless connection through a router (Apple Airport Extreme). My router has a Linux server, external hard drive (Seagate 1TB), and laser printer (Brother 3040 CN) connected to it, all via wired connections.

Up until last week, everything was working fine. When I installed Windows 7 initially (four months ago), it detected everything automatically and I was able to access my network server, printer, and external hard drive without any problems. Now for some reason, all of the devices have disappeared except for the laser printer. I used to see them listed in "Network" but not any more.

There have been no major changes to my computer other than installing VM Ware Workstation.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks.

Try uninstalling vm ware and see what happens...also make sure printer sharing is on.

I uninstalled VM Ware but that did not change anything. File and printer sharing has always been on.

After doing some testing, I think the problem is a DNS issue because I can reach the various devices and other computers using the IP addresses but not using the logical names. My network router is an Apple Airport Extreme, which uses the Bonjour service for name resolution (from what I've read). The Bonjour service on my Windows machine is running but perhaps there is a problem with it.

    Any thoughts?

Things I would try, disable the adapter settings by opening network and sharing settings, and then re-enable same....open a cmd prompt and use ipconfig /all command and note your DNS addresses (usually two) try ping them and see what happens... Can you map a network drive using it's IP address?

Disabled and re-enabled the adapter and did an ipconfig /all...I don't see any DNS addresses (see below). All I see is the IP address of my router (Airport) and my laptop (IC-TPT61). Yes, I can map drives to the other resources using the IP addresses.

Something that I did not expect to see however is a virtual adapter for Check Point VPN client. When I installed VM Ware, I installed a Check Point VPN client in that VM...it seems as though there are some things lingering from that even after I removed VM Ware, although I have checked everywhere and can't seem to find any reference to it on my laptop.
