Hey guys, I'm running vista ultimate, and yesterday, randomly I noticed in the task bar, the network connection notification said I was disconnected, but I wasn't, and I will still able to browse the internet. When trying to go into the network connections from the control panel, the window pops up saying error connecting to server, and none of the options were clickable. Now whenever I try to click network connections, explorer locks up.

Also, my digital camera, a Canon PowerShot S3 has stopped working on this computer. When it tries to recognize the camera, it says failed when it attempts to install a driver. The camera works fine on my Windows XP and other vista computer.

I've looked around services.msc, and didn't see anything that disabled that looked like it shouldn't be. I think the two problems are related somehow however.

Also, is there anyway I can run a repair install on this, like reinstall the core OS files, without losing all of my data and installed apps. I did this alot of times with XP, but I'm not so sure about vista.

Hi and welcome to the BBS,

    From the Canon website:
    http://www.usa.canon.com/consumer/c...oadDetailTabAct&fcategoryid=322&modelid=13077
Select Vista as the OS and you will see the software updates.
This will be relevant if you have installed the Canon software.

What type of internet connection do you have? If it is connected via USB as well, you should look at updating or reinstalling the USB drivers. Updates for the USB drivers may be included with the chipset drivers at the motherboard/computer manufacturer's website. To reinstall them, in Device Manager, under Universal Serial Bus Controllers, highlight and uninstall any listing termed "Controller ", they will be automatically reinstalled when you reboot.

No canon software is installed. The strange thing is, is that Vista detected my camera flawlessly for the past 5 months, then it just well stopped the other day.

    Sound problem now!

One of my games, and VLC have stopped outputting sound now! Only FireFox, and vista built in sounds seem to be working now. I believe all these problems to be related, also, in the systems section in the control panel, it no longer lists CPU type, or CPU speed, its an AMD opteron 165 running @2.63GHz, and has said that for the past few months, except these past few days!

    Help please!

    Sounds strange.

Try a System Restore to at least before these recent problems.

Look in the BIOS/Configuration settings at startup. Check that the CPU is listed correctly, but reset to default settings anyway.

Check for any problems listed in Device Manager. If you have installed drivers using updating software, look at rolling back those drivers.

An Opteron is not a mainstream CPU. Check it's compatibility with the motherboard. Are you overclocking? There may be BIOS upgrades at the motherboard manufacturer's website, but look at those after exhausting over avenues. Do a non-Windows (DOS) upgrade, especially because Windows seems unstable.

BIOS is up to the date, the OPteron 165 is basically a relabeled athlon64 X2 3600. It is overclocked, but my overclock is 100% stable, and the motherboard has full compatibility.

It is not like this has been a problem since the beginning, the rig worked perfectly last week, and everything was recognized etc..

I still get sound, but only windows sounds, or anything within firefox (youtube, etc..)

Things disappearing or just stopped working, I would call that unstable.

Vista seems very stable to me if all the hardware manufacturer's Vista drivers are installed. If Vista drivers are not available on the computer supplier's (motherboard) drivers disk, identify the hardware correctly and find drivers at the manufacturer's website.

USB...network...audio...basic problems are happening. Basic is at the BIOS level. What problems might the BIOS be having??

Listen to me. USB, Network and audio are ALL working fine. All drivers are up to date. I have done hours of stability testing. This computer has been overclocked and stable for over 6 months. No crashes, no corrupt files, no anything. It just ran great. I'm not an idiot when it comes to computers, I'm quite familiar with XP, Vista, and I know when my hardware is stable!

    Just listen.

Networking works, I can get on the internet, go on AIM, check my e-mail, etc.. But it shows in the taskbar icon that I am disconnected, which I am not. If I go into the control panel, and hit the Network Connection and Sharing icon, the window opens then explorer locks up for a bit, then finally the network window updates, but it is not functional.

Audio. Windows sounds, I can hear them fine. If I open up firefox, go to youtube and play a video I can hear that fine. If I fire up any video game, or my media player, I CANNOT hear them, vista wont even recognize them as playing anything in the audio mixer.

USB. My printer, scanner, mouse and various other USB things work fine, but when I plug in my camera, it says it cannot install the driver, even though it was just working fine last week.

I should also note system restore is not functioning either, it is not creating a restore point, and just throws an error in Event Viewer.
All of these started acting up on the same day at the same time.

You should note that the window is also completely frozen.

I'm not trying to be rude, but I already went over this stuff

A Windows Update may have changed that!

I was running my memory at the best timing it was supposed to support with my motherboard. Ran fine for months, then all of a sudden BSOD's started.

When analyzing the dump files I found out it was referencing my memory, then I remembered, so I switched back to using the default memory timings, and my problems went away.

Good troubleshooting in your case would mean starting to run your system not overclocked. If that takes care of your problems, you have your answer. If it doesn't, you continue t-shooting.

Wow. Now everything is working again. Figures AOL did something to ***** it up. But I don' like NT Authority as an administrator. I have un-installed AIM for now.

But new problem, System restore is not working, it says not allows to preform a shadow copy of this drive when i try to create a restore point

That's correct, I wouldn't suggest going that route
