    System Specifications:

    Biostar M7-MIA-R Motherboard
    AMD XP 1800 CPU
    Micron 512 DDR Ram
    ATI Radeon 9000 Video Card
    SB Live! X-Gamer 5.1
    Netgear 10/100 Ethernet Card
    Maxtor 60 GIG and 20 GIG 7200 RPM HDD's
    SONY 24x/10x/40x CD-RW

Internet connection: Comcast Cable over college campus network

    Currently Running: Windows XP Pro

Problem: Whenever I run a filesharing program, (Bit Torrent and Edonkey in particular) after about 10 minutes of network activity my computer begins to lockup and unlock for 5 second or more periods. After about a minute or so of lockups my internet connection dies.

Remedies: After the connection dies the freezing stops, and I can reconnect using ipconfig /release, ipconfig /renew.

But this problem prevents me from ever downloading files, or using my computer when I download. It only ever happens during filesharing, I usually stay online with no problem or lockups for days until I attempt a filesharing program.

I have scanned for spyware using Ad-Aware and Spybot, I also have Spywareblaster and Ad-Shield running along with Admuncher. I'm using Norton Antivirus 2003 with up to date definitions. I also checked my tasks list and there arent any unknown non system applications running.

    Any advice?

I suspect this is your problem:
You could try contacting them and seeing if you have to do anything special to download, or if it a forbidden activity. They must have some policy for "allowable" downloads.

Have you looked at your event logs? May be a clue there.

Also my strong preference is to find the max speed your network will use and set the network card to that value rather than auto.

Easiest way to find out is probably to set for 100Mbps Full Duplex and see if you can connect. If not, back off to 10Mbps Half Duplex and try again.

If a check per Johanna indicates they don't have a problem with the downloading and setting the NIC to the best possible speed doesn't help, post back since there are some setting changes that might help but they aren't the first things to try.

Moving this to the Networking section.
