    I've just upgraded from Netscape6.0 to Netscape7.1. When i print an email it always prints using a large font size, even though the font settings are the same as they were in NS6. Is there a setting to change the printed font size?

    Welcome to the Forum, Nickb!

    Hi Nick,

    The font setting preferences are located here:
    Edit | Preferences | Appearance | Fonts

    There is no specific setting for printers, if that's what you're asking. My HP printer gives wysiwyg, so have not experienced your problem.

    When you view the message you wish to print, is the font size large?

    Ramona :D

    EDIT:

    I decided not to wait for your reply, and to give you this workaround, in the event that what you view in the message itself looks normal, and only the printing enlarges the font size.

    Try this:

    Close Netscape
    Open the userContent.css file using Notepad
    File located in: C:\Windows\Application Data\Mozilla\Profiles\profilename\*.slt\chrome
    (Depending on your OS)

    Add following lines
    Code:
    /* mailnews font size */
    .moz-text-plain pre {
    font-size: 11pt ! important;
    font-family: arial ! important;
    }
    You can change font-size, and the font-family to whatever you wish. (Don't use px)
    The problem should then be fixed.

    OR

    You can use a Template:
    From the "Help Contents ":
    To save a message to use as a template:

    1. In the Mail window, click Compose to create a new message and then set the default font, text size, text color, background color, and any other default formatting you want.

    Alternatively, open an existing message that already has the formatting you want.

    2. While displaying the message, open the File menu, choose Save As, then choose Template. The message is stored as a template in the Templates folder for the current mail account.

    To compose a message using a template:

    1. In the Mail window, select the Templates folder for the account where you created the message template.

    2. Double-click the message template to open it.

    3. Edit the message, then save it (to put it in the Drafts folder) or send it.

    Note: Sending the message does not remove the template from the Templates folder. The template is preserved for future use.

    Ramona,
    I have the same problem with Netscape 7.1. Printing from webpages the fonts are too large (compared to 7.02).

    Will the work-around work for printing from webpages?

    Hi Antony,

    I just printed a webpage using both Netscape 7.1 and Mozilla 1.5b, and both pages printed perfectly, and in fact were identical, as in font size. The page printed exactly as it appears on the Internet.

    You might try the workaround and see if it works. It can always be disabled if it doesn't.

    Keep me posted...

    Sorry for the late reply, my own printer is out of tonner at home.

    The answer... sorry, it does not work for webpages.
    (HP LaserJet 5000N)

    The problem with this work around... fonts in Mail window appeared different, I am not used to. (I know I am old-fashioned.) It did work for printing mails.

    My problem, two different printing text size from Netscape 7.02 and 7.1. In Netscape 7.1 the font is too big. I want to print smaller.

    (I usually print lots of pages, paper is heavy, I want to save trees.)

    Have been using the FinePrint series for years. Currently using FinePrint 2000, latest is FinePrint 5. Installs a selectable "Printer" onto your computer. Has many nice features. Besides doing the obvious .. 1,2,4,8 pages to one print sheet (yes, print is very small), it can "accumulate" these pages from various jobs by using the "defer" option(see Combined Print Jobs). Creating a single report type printout from different source points. Another feature is no matter where you are, if you need a "viewable print out ", just direct the job to printer choice "FinePrint ". It always displays the printed out report on screen (allows you to select page to sheet and other options... also was very handy in Netscape 6.xx's, NO preview option) before you send it to the default printer. It is NOT a free program. Not sure about FinePrint 5, but everything previous, unregistered copies carry a "advertising tag line" at the bottom of the report. All the features worked.

    Hi Ramona,

    I can confirm that the the fonts appear larger in print preview than they do on the screen in NS7.1

    I edited userContent.css as you suggested, logged out & back in again to reload my w2k profile, but that did not solve the problem.

    I tried creating a template as suggested. I'm not sure where in my w2k profile the template was saved, but i sent myself an email (after saving to a template) and then i did a print preview on the email. The fonts are still too big.

    Any further thoughts/comments?

    Netscape 7.1 Prints in Large Fonts

    I have had the same experience as Nickb. When I upgraded to Netscape 7.1 from Netscape 4.74, e-mails both printed and showed up on Print Preview in a larger font size than before (resulting in unsightly line breaks). The work-around I have adopted is to go to Print Preview at the start of a session, click on Page Setup, unselect "Shrink To Fit Page Width ", and enter a Scale of 85%. This shrinks the text size back to about what it used to be (but not the headers and footers, which remain larger).

    The interesting thing is that the size "problem" seems to be printer-dependent. When this first came up and I was away from home, I was using an HP LaserJet 4MP printer, or (soon thereafter) an HP 2500L color laser printer. Once back home, at my regular office, I found that the same phenomenon exists with the HP 4500 color laser printer that I have here. However, using an HP Deskjet 722C (with a "720C v 10.3" driver) at home, the print size (both in Print Preview and after printing) is not enlarged! Also, when I use an old HP Laserjet IIP Postscript driver at my office (with the 4500 printer), the print size is not enlarged (actually, smaller than it used to be with Netscape 4.74 and the HP 4500 printer [I haven't tried to dig out old e-mails from the HP IIP PS days for comparison]).

    Since I routinely use 7.1 with the HP printers that result in an enlarged font, it would be nice if there were some way to adjust the font size "permanently" so that I wouldn't have to remember to change the Page Setup at the start of each session. However, since the Page Setup selections carry over to the 7.1 browser as well, that might end up with a default setting that could work less well than the "Shrink To Fit" default for the browser. Nevertheless, if there is some way of adjusting the font size for these "problematic" printers (problematic for Netscape 7.1 only, as far as I can see . . .), I'd love to try it and see what happens. (I haven't tried the procedure that Ramona suggested yet, since it did not seem to work for Nickb.)

    Hi pls,

    Thanks for your workaround, and I have made a note of your suggestions. I too have an HP 722C DJ and do not experience the "large font syndrome ".

    I think you are correct in asumming that it is printer dependent, as many users report NO problems. I have been on the lookout for other workarounds, and will certainly add what I find to the Solutions page.

    I' ve tried printing to both an HP LJ 6MP, and an HP LJ 9000 PCL6 printer, and it previews & prints in large fonts to both printers. I've tried scaling the print jobs, by removing the "shrink to fit " setting as suggested by pls, but this does not seem to work either. It seems that i can only print emails in one large font size.

    Just to add what I found,
    Netscape 7.1 (web) seems to print in the same large font size as MSIE. Previously (up to) Netscape 7.02, the web page print out from Netscape are smaller. And I failed to make fonts smaller in Netscape 7.1.
