Hi to all who are not IE drones! As someone who is the polar opposite of a recent convert caused by all the recent MS bugs, it finally seems like there is some sort of poetic justice in the world! [Too many people saying things like "Isn't outlook express e-mail?" My response to them is No, use AOL! :)]

Been using Netscape since the late 1.x days and have NEVER used outlook distress ever for e-mail.

While attempting to add netscape webmail accounts to NS 7.1, it appears hopeless to get registered. All of the web-based components get setup properly when a new account is created or an existing account will have it claimed that all of the above is created [gee, since it already exists!], but there is ultimately a timeout from the webmail server claiming it "cannot create a mailbox" and directs you to the web-based version to create it there. Of course, it is already there and functional there, but the point is, I am unable to finish the job of adding this imap-based account to NS 7.1.

Unless anyone knows what's wrong with what I am doing, is this just some problem Netscape itself is having these recent weeks?

    What I do:

Install latest Sun Java VM first. works fine with IE.

All NS 7.1 options selected in custom except Java VM, Canadian, developer's pack, Mcafee clinic.

All but the e-mail seems fine. O/S is either WinXP or Win98SE; doesn't seem to make a difference. Tried on multiple computers, etc. All fail equally. Click on e-mail icon, shows free webmail and nothing else, get asked to pick one;choose netscape mail; setup existing account, give account particulars, contacts server OK, asks for name to put on outgoing mail [which I intend to delete later, since they insist I provide a name at this point!], then goes to the fatal timeout contacting the server and the ultimate message about all else was setup, etc.

If someone can provide the current settings, I would like to try to manually enter the IMAP settings manually to access the account stuff, so I don't have to use browser-based, etc.

    Thanks in advance.

cjl (Is mozilla really the gator from the Izod/Lacoste shirts?)

ps: As a long-term usenet diety [alt.fan.charles-lasner], I really like this vBulletin software as used here. A great product! No posting problems; I guess no more war stories about getting groups propagated or control group shootouts, etc. :)

You dreamer! I don't know what is going on with the Webmail set up, since I barely use it anymore, and 30 days of no use, and you are out. I may be out as far as I know. I understand that you are having problems with the registration. I wish I had. And in setting up webmail in the mail client, since it is not a proper IMAP account, and you don't use its password, but the one of the IM, instead. Just think about that.
Having tried Netscape Webmail at the website. An unique concept, but there are so many people who do not even think about it. I don't know about this registration hanup, but you should be able to find out if webmail works where it should, in first place. If you said you did, pardone me. Your post was pretty long.
But, don't you have a proper ISP account? Having Webmail first may complicate things later. There may be a problem with webmail, but it is of little importance to me, since Webmail cannot be set up in the client of Mozilla, and its kids. I detest the lizard icon, related to Izod or not. I change the moment I am done installing, and I will change the name of the program, if I can. Using: Seabunny Firelizard!

    Welcome to the Forum, Clasys!

    Hi Clasys,

When you did you custom install of Netscape, can we assume that you did opt for Instant Messaging? I finally gave up on Netscape Webmail, because the server is often cranky and refuses access. I'm not sure if this is your problem, but you might wait a few days and try again to set it up in Mail & Newsgroups.

    The settings for Webmail are:

    Outgoing: smtp.netscape.net
    Incoming: imap.mail.netcenter.com
    Port: 143

To the best of my knowledge the red dragon is not from Izod shirts...

 Hey guys! As I've posted twice in the past two days, this problem has existed for the past week (plus a day or two). Be happy that you cannot install your webmail account into your mail & news settings. Once you do, your netscape will freeze upon reentry or upon exit from netscape. It acts very much like a DNS worm. Perhaps Netscape's webmail server has been inffected?

One thing I am sure of after reinstalling all components individually, it is not your PC. On the bright side, my Macs are not affected, only my PC's using netscape 7.1 that have a webmail account installed in the mail & news settings.

    Perhaps someone should notify Netscape?

    Mike

I heard of someone else having problems at registration. Just click Cancel, and proceed then to your Mail set up.
But, I caution everyone not to expect Netscape Webmail as set up in the Mail client to be well behaved. This does not mean that it is a programs bug, but rather a misbehaving account, which was not created to be IMAP.
