I am using an old Pentium 233MMX 64MB RAM with Windows 95 version 4.00.950B. I believe my Netscape browser is version 4.6 but I need to upgrade, as my home banking program won't work with this version. The Sillydog701 site seems to suggest Netscape 6.x isn't recommended. But the 7.x versions seem to be for Windows 98 or newer. They also mention a streamlined version, and a full, and a stand alone. I have a dialup connection. I don't use the internet much, so I probably don't need all the bells and whistles, but I would like to use what's current and works best.

Which version of Netscape should I download?

Thank you for any help you can give me.

Hi, Sorry to tell you this but Windows 95 will not work with Netscape 7.0 There are problems with the Java script and other features. I do not think even a basic load would work for you since it sounds like your site may need to use Java. Firebird might work, but 95 is slow and will hang on you. Look and see if NS 4.8 might work or maybe Opera.

I used, about three years ago a 4.7x Netscape on a Win95 and only 166Mhz, and I had no problems other than those to be expected on such a puny system. I even tried that miserable 6.0, which was worse than the preview releases.
You should be ok with 4.8. It is possible that 7.02 may work, but it is not worth the effort.

    Welcome to the Forum, erick912!

    Hi erick912,

The SillyDog701 Streamline Version is definitely what you're looking for, as you can do a "Custom" install and opt out of everything but the Browser. This page illustrates those options: Custom Install of SillyDog701 Streamline

Netscape, Version 7.02 would most likely serve your needs. It is a very stable Release, and as you use the Internet infrequently, it would be a good choice.

Leave your Communicator 4.6 on your system, if you have plenty of HD space. It's always nice to have a second browser, just in case. The Netscape 7 install will automatically convert your 4.6 Users Profile to the Netscape 7 Profiles folder, which will now be located here:
    C:\Windows\Mozilla\Profiles\profilename\*.slt
instead of in your Program Files Folder.

Just as I was about to submit this reply, I see that Herb has replied also. I have to disagree with him however, as I run Mozilla 1.5 on an old IBM Aptiva, 166 MHz Cyrix Instead Processor, 2 GB HD, and 64 MB SDRAM. Granted it's not as fast as my PIII, 800 MHz PC, but it does run about as fast as 4.79, which is also on this older PC. I've also run Netscape 7.0 on the older PC. Now, in all fairness, I have to tell you, that I can do the laundry, vacuum, and mow the lawn, before Netscape/Mozilla loads...... (just kidding). ;)

Please post back if you have further questions.

    Ramona :D
