I have an Acer Open computer 5.5 years old, 3.2G HD, 64M RAM, Pentium 200 MMX running Win 98se and Netscape 4.79.
It seems that Netscape is getting slower and slower as time goes on in accessing web sites and is NOT accessing more and more sites. Even after I do get into some sites (few), Netscape will not go deeper into it. Some parts of the site will access and some won't. It used to happen very little now it's happening more. I tried 4.80 and that didn't improve. Any suggestions? Can I upgrade to ver 6 or 7? I noticed my system requirements are not completely up to par.
I also have IE 6 loaded. It doesn't give me any trouble at all. I find myself using it more and more. I've been using Netscape since 1994. I like it's e-mail best!
    Thanks for any help!! SKEETF

    Hi Skeet,

You can use Netscape 7.02, but don't even think about Netscape 6, as it's obsolete, and full of bugs.

I run 7.02 on an old IBM Aptiva, 166 mHz Cyrix processor, 2 GB HD, 64 MB SDRAM. It's slow, but I haven't experienced any crashes. I don't use the PC often though. I do know that other users with systems very similar to yours do run 7.02.

If you have more questions, we'll be happy to answer them...

I would go for some cleaning (temps, etc.), scandisk, and defrag. Adding another 64 MB RAM may help, too.

I downloaded Netscape 7.02 from the Netscape download site not knowing the download would self install. I went ahead with it anyway. It loaded and works and I didn't lose anything.
Now, both Netscape 4.78 and 7.02 work. Both programs are jn my folder C:\program files\netscape and the folder contains 72.84 megs.

What's the best way to get rid of 4.78?

Is there a site to download the 7.02 program and save it for manual installing?

How do I access the Message Center in 7.02 so I can create folders for my saved mail?

Thanks for all your help guys!! SKEETF

    Hi Skeet,

    Links for Netscape downloads:

    Holger Metzger's Compact 14 MB
    Antony Shen's SillyDog701 Streamline 12MB Streamline - 10 MB Standalone (No Mail)
Netscape FTP Site Full (32 MB) & Base (14 MB)

Since HD space is not an issue, then keep Communicator 4.78. It is very compatible with Netscape 7.x. It can be uninstalled through the Add/Remove applet.

To Access Mail & Newsgroups Accounts
    Click on the "Window" Tab
    OR
Click on the Mail Envelope in the lower left hand corner of the Status Bar at the bottom of the browser window.

If you have more questions, feel free to post back.

    Thank you Ramona:

I cannot seem to get to the area in 7.02 that's like Message Center in 4.xx. I tried your suggestions.
When I press the Windows tab and then double click or single click the Mail & Newsgroup button, I either get my Inbox or Compose depending whether or not I have an e-mail item highlighted.
Same thing happens when I click on the envelope in the lower left corner; if no e-mail is highlighted, I get my Inbox and if an e-mail is highlighted nothing happens! What am I doing wrong? SKEET:confused:

I figured out how to create an new folder in my e-mail account by clicking on FILE in COMPOSE, then NEW, then FOLDER, then creating a new name for the PARENT folder. However, I still can't figure out how to access the folders to retrieve my SAVED and other messages in any of the folders. I can see them if I try to FILE messages to them. But I cannot access them later for viewing my messages.
Thanks for any help, again!! SKEETF :(

    Hi Skeet,

I cannot seem to get to the area in 7.02 that's like Message Center in 4.xx. I tried your suggestions.

There is no feature like Message Center, in 7.02. Your Inbox Window is what you get.

When I press the Windows tab and then double click or single click the Mail & Newsgroup button, I either get my Inbox or Compose depending whether or not I have an e-mail item highlighted.

A single click is all you need. ( Double clicking might bring up a new window if a specific mail is selected.) You should get the Inbox, and I'm not at all clear on how you get the Compose Window?

Same thing happens when I click on the envelope in the lower left corner; if no e-mail is highlighted, I get my Inbox and if an e-mail is highlighted nothing happens! What am I doing wrong?

I truly have no idea what is happening, as I have been trying to duplicate what you describe, and cannot. Forgive me if I am being totally dense here. :(

You should be able to create a new Folder in the Inbox window under File|New. To retrieve folders, in order to access Saved Files, are you talking about within Netscape, or offline in Windows Explorer? All Folders should be visible in your Mail Window? Here is a Screen Shot of what you should be seeing in your Mail & Newsgroups component.

I hope I haven't added to your confusion...

Thanks Ramona for the screenshot. I found the list of folders by sliding the left hand window edge of the mail screen over to the right.

Is there another way to display this folder listing with an icon or button or menu command and have it pop up when I want it? Until I get used to this 7.02 version, I still like 4.7x's e-mail features.

One more quirk I've run into. In the 4.7x version e-mail compose I am able to copy and paste animated ".gif" images in the body of the composition. I just copy and paste. BUT in 7.02 when I right click on the compose screen, having copied a ".gif" file, I do not get the option to paste. Even the Edit command doesn't let me paste. How can I get this ? SKEETF:eek:

    Hi Skeet,

You should always be able to bring up your Mail window with the three panes. Have you configured your Mail Window Preference in the Edit | Preferences | Mail & Newsgroups settings?

You can't paste an image into the Compose window like you can in Communicator. You can use the "Insert" button which does the same thing. You will need to enable HTML for this button to appear. That is done in Edit | Preferences | Mail & Newsgroups Account Settings.

You could still use Messenger for your Mail & Newsgroups, if you prefer.

    Hi again Ramona:

    I don't understand "three panes ". Where are/is they/it?

I did configure "Select the window layout you prefer for Mail" to the first scheme.

I found a boxed already checked in my account settings, "Compose messages in HTML format ". I used Insert, then Image, then Choose File and then selscted an ANIMATED "gif" file, applied some "Alternate text" and/or" Don't use alternate text ". The image IS pasted to the compositon but the animation doesn't work! What am I missing?

How do I use "Messenger" per your reference?

I'm slowly getting there, Thanks. SKEETF :)

    Hi Skeet,

If you chose the Mail Window layout on the left, then you do have three panes:
The pane on the left with the Mail Account and folders
The pane on the right with the Mail headers
The message pane below the header pane....

Do you have to slide the left hand pane over each time you open Mail & Newsgroups?

Save your email containing animated image files as a Draft or send it to yourself. Then you will see that the animation is enabled.

FYI, "Messenger" is the Communicator Mail component. Netscape 7 refers to the mail component as Mail & Newsgroups.

Per the above post of Romona:

Yes! Is there another way to open and close the left Mail Window pane w/o sliding?

    Another quirk I've run into.
Netscape has taken over the file association of a number of files, .jpg and .gif for instance. I re-associated those files with the program I want them with but the files still have the Netscape logo in front of them in Windows Explorer. How do I fix this? Thank you for your help thus far!! Hi Skeet,

There is a "Grippy " on the pane separater. Click on the Grippy instead of sliding the pane over. This should make the pane stationary.

Let us know if you continue to have problems.

    Hi Skeet,

    Edit | Preferences | Advanced | System

Remove the ticks beside the file types and protocols you do not wish Netscape to handle...

Your best bet is to only enable the following:
    File Types;
    HTML

    Protocols:
    HTTP
    HTTPS

Enable: If any other application changes these settings, notify me.
