After leaving Netscape and just as the modem disconnects from the internet the display resets itself to 256 colors. I then have to go to the tool bar and reset it to high color-800x600 to get it back. I have reset it several times thru the control panel/display to use 32 bit color, did a restart and even that doesn't work as the next time Netscape shuts down it happens again. It's getting really irritating as I didn't have this problem before installing Netscape 7.0. How can I correct this?(added) The computer is a HP513n, 256mg RAM, processor-I'm not sure, HP says it is a Celeron 1.8Gig but Belarc Advisor says it is a Pentium IV, OS is Win XP Home Edition.

In Edit>Preferences>Appearrance>Fonts>Display Resolution, do you have it set to 96 dpi, or some other number?

    Netscape settings

Broni, it's set at 96, must be correct as I have never changed it.

    Hi Loren

I'm sorry I can't give you a solution, but I have a suspicion. Many programs operate in 800x600 32 bit screen enviroment..... except games. Have you installed / uninstalled any games recently? If uninstalled, you might have some old registry info thats needs to be removed. Do you have a registery cleaner your comfortable with? Your running XP home. I was advised by members of this forum to use "RegScrubXP. Excellent program, plus it runs in automatic mode... for those of us that don't have a clue how to edit the registry. You can download it here
    ADDED NOTE:
You say this occurs after you close Netscape and WHILE your modem terminates. When you close Netscape, leave your connection on.... does screen setting change?

Thanks Dennis, I have loaded a couple of games but not deleted them. When I clicked on the link you gave me I got a page that said "This object has been blocked" I've been getting that lately too. The HP (or XP) firewall is turned off and I have checked Zone Alarm settings, can't figure out what is causing that either it might be the Norton anti-virus program but I can't see any settings that would cause that.

Sounds like Zone Alarm is blocking. Turn it off, download the program, scan it with Norton Anti Virus. Turn Zone alarm back on.

Thanks Dennis, you were right it was Zone Alarm doing the blocking all right! I have it disabled and the page loaded. Now I am getting a lot of "when attempting to contact--------the connection was refused" I can't believe that a site offering something for sale would refuse any connection, any idea on this one?

I found a solutiion to the problem. I created a shortcut for Netscape on the desktop and placed it next to my internet connection logo for convienience, went to the tool bar and deleted the Netscape quick connect icon and that solved the problem, Netscape no longer changes the monitor graphics settings when shutting down now it does it when it launches---aaarrrgggghhh!

Dennis, I downloaded RegScrubXP installed and ran it. It said I had 82 bad items on the comp so I hit fix em' all, it apparently did, but this problem must have been #83, the screen resolution still changes from high color to 256 colors when Netscape launches. I do think the comp is running faster now though. Thanks for the link.

    Hi Loren,

Some how this rogue screen change program call has attached itself Netscape.
Try this..... Go to the Netscape shortcut on your desktop. "Right Click "....select...." "Properties ". From this view, look for a field called "target ".... It should look like this....
"C:\Program Files\Netscape\Netscape\Netscp.exe" Just because it is different, does NOT mean you should change it. To test, copy paste the original in a safe place, then copy mine in. The worse that will happen, Netscape will not load. If won't load, change it back to the original. Do changes with Netscape closed. PS... Looking at your computer configuration, you have a fast computer. I would suggest "disabling Quick Launch ". Like IE, it preloads part of Netscape into memory... but does not update this file during the session. This can cause "old" information to be written over you new preferred preference changes. This caught me trying to fix a corrupted "cookie file "
