I have netscape 4.79 running on a fast computer at work under Windows 2000. Very often, pages don't load. Sometimes they work when I hit enter again or refresh. sometimes they don't. Sometimes I get a message "server not available ". The same pages load fine under Internet Explorer. Has Gates finally vanguished Netcape?

    Hi rbridge,

    Try the usual maintenance tasks:

    C:\Program Files\Netscape\Users\yourusername\

    Delete netscape.hst file
Empty the Cache folder, including the fat.db file

Both of the above can cause problems if not maintained.

Possible causes for the error you received:

The URL that is being queried does not exist
Netscape is unable to communicate with the TCP/IP stack (dialup)
Netscape is unable to communicate with the Domain Name Server
Something is blocking the ISP from communicating with the URL

It could be the code used by the web author which is not Netscape friendly/compatible.

If you have just accessed a page with heavy Java this sometimes causes a problem in browsing.

If you use a Hosts file (not Hosts.sam) for blocking spyware, this could be the problem.

You probably need to take this issue up with your system administrator at work. She/he will be better able to determine the cause.

    Has Gates finally vanguished Netcape?

    In his dreams! ;)
