    When I use netscape mail & newsgroups to retrieve my emails from the Netscape webmail IMAP server, it usually works well, but sometimes it doesn't work at all and it gives the following error message:

    "Unable to connect to your IMAP Server. You may have exceeded the maximum number of connections to this server, If so use the Advanced IMAP Server Settings dialog to reduce the number of cached connections. "

    There is no Advanced setting in the IMAP Server dialog box. I'm using Netscape 7.1 on a Windows XP system.

    Can anyone help?

    Hi J R W,

    This is a common problem with the Netscape WebMail. I have seen NO concrete solutions, and the ones that have been posted on NG's and Forums seem to be temporary. Here they are, for you to try:

    Change the max cached connections to "7" to avoid IMAP server failures and errors. (The default is 5)

    user_pref( "mail.server.server7.max_cached_connections ", 2);

    In about:config
    mail.server.server7.max_cached_connections Value = 7

    Back up your prefs.js file before editing the prefs.js or adding the new value to about:config.

    Another suggestion was to disable:
    Edit | Mail & Newsgroups Account settings | Server Settings
    "Empty trash on exit "

    These fixes are temporary, and you will no doubt be frustrated trying to get them to work. Your best bet is to access the Netscape Webmail through the browser Portal, rather than from your Mail & Newsgroups Account Settings. I'm sorry to be the bearer of doom and gloom, but that is the consensus.

    This is not a client side issue, but a server side issue.

    Thanks Ramona.

    I have changed the max_cached_connections Value from 5 to 7. Hopefully it will help a little bit.

    I had a notion that it might be a server side issue but since the error message was so exact I thought that I would post the question because I figured others as well as myself might benefit from the answer.

    I have had better luck checking my Netscape webmail from the internet than through the Mail and Newsgroups client. If things continue to get worse on Netscape webmail front I will just switch to a different webmail provider.

    I have little use for a webmail account, so I care little about Netscape, but I have followed the access problem, since they got worse some two months ago.
    You can make the infamous Advanced button appear by adding to user.js this line. user_pref( "mail.accountmanager.netscape.hide_advanced_button ", false);
    A small number is more effective, but it will be changed, regardless of your settings. Two is accepted, but it will change to five very quickly.
    You may have received an e-mail about the fact that you will lose the account, if not used for 30 days. I am not sure if this special IMAP account counts or not. I have two usernames, and for the past two weeks I have been able to get my mail, in Netscape, with no problem with one account. But the other one does not even bother with any long statements. Login failed is the norm.
    I can access both accounts through ePrompter http://www.eprompter.com , but it has a really simple interface.
    I have been, periodically, accessing the account through the website, but, at least, one account has been working for me.
    If you need a webmail, there are many alternatives, which don;t play games with you.

    Thanks for the information about adding the line:
    user_pref( "mail.accountmanager.netscape.hide_advanced_button ", false);
    to the pref.js file. It does indeed makes the infamous Advanced IMAP Server button appear. The options presented when the now present Advanced button is pushed allow the user to set the Maximum number of cached connections.

    I also appreciated finding out about the possibility of using ePrompter for Netscape mail.

    Is the consensus that it is better to change the max_cached_connections Value from the default 5 to a higher number like 7 or to a lower number like 2. The error message that is often presented when the login process fails ( "If so use the Advanced IMAP Server Settings dialog to reduce the number of cached connections. ") suggests that 2 may be the better choice.

    Thanks.

    It is funny that I have not received the message in the past week, and, I get one account, and I cannot get the other at all, except in ePrompter and on the website.
    As for the number of connections, nothing helps. Any number from 2 to 5 will do. Higher numbers do not seem to work. I even tried 99, once. Having two AOL accounts, also as special IMAPS, I must be careful not to attempt to open two such account in a row.

    John,

    I use myrealbox.com webmail (IMAP), as does Westside, and it can be accessed from within the Mail & Newsgroups, both Netscape and Mozilla. It has its kinks like ALL mail programs, but is certainly more reliable than Netscape Webmail. If you want to check it out:
    http://www.myrealbox.com/

    There are other reliable webmail sites out there, but this is one that I have experienced.

    The consensus is that "7" is the desired number, rather than the default "5 ". The more IMAP sessions you have running, the more connection settings needed.

    Just three notes: 1. I was able to set up my second Webmail account. The number of connection which starts with zero, was set to 2. I had not set to download mail, or to check it. And, it has worked fine since yesterday. The important thing is not to check the two accounts successively. I have several POP3 accounts, so it is no problem.

    2. Myrealbox is a sort of beta for the Novell company which produces Mail clients for business, so Myrealbox may be down for extensive periods of time during the weekend.
    It has been reliable for me, since I do not count on it as an all-purpose Client. I can be set up as IMAP, POP3 and used on the website.

    3. If not fussy about appearance, most Webmails can be set up in ePrompter. I have been able to get there my Netscape Webmail, when I could not get it in Netscape Mail.
