I am unable to receive photos (JPG)that have been emailed to me that were cut and pasted to the body of the message. I am able to receive attatchments just fine. I tried the cut and paste method and sent an email to myself. After the message is downloaded and opened I click on the link and it opens another Netscape window that is blank. Is there something wrong or is it just not something that can be done with Netscape Messenger?
I have checked and unchecked the View attachments inline without any change in the results.
Hope someone can help me with this.

    Thanks.

Hi troof, and welcome to the Forum!

We had a problem similar to yours just last week: Viewing Attachments

    This was the solution:

It could be that your prefs.js file has become corrupt. You can rename the prefs.js file to prefs.old. When you restart Communicator a new prefs.js file will be created.

Note: you will need to re-enter your email preferences as well as any other preference settings you have, if you follow this procedure.

Back up your Users folder before editing your files.

Let us know if this helps.

    Romona,

Thank you for the reply. Before I start messing with stuff I think I should try to make it more clear what if anything I think the problem is. I did read that particular post but it wasn't what I needed fixed.

I don't consider cutting and pasting to the body of the message an attachment. This could be a terminology problem I am having. I consider an attacnment to be a file that is attached to the email. In other words the email arrives with the paper clip icon.

I guess what I am trying to find out is if you can, by all laws of nature, cut and paste a JPG image to the email body (it does appear in the body of the message) and have it arrive to the receiver as an image in the body of the message?
Not an attachment. If not, is this just something that is part of Netscape Messenger of is it true for all mail servers?

I hope this explains what I am trying to find out.

I will hold off on fixing anything until I hear from you again.

Thanks for you time. Especially since this could be a non problem.

    TRoof

    troof,

You shouldn't have a problem with cut/paste or copy/paste. I copy images from my HD and paste to a message frequently.

Do you have the HTML Editor enabled?
In your Preferences|Messages have you selected "Forward Messages Inline "?
You have also selected "View Attachment Inline "

If all the above settings are in place, you should be able to send and receive images that are viewable, not received or sent as attachments.

This is another method of including an image/jpg file within the message:

    Edit|Preferences|Mail & Newsgroups|Formatting

Be certain that "Use the HTML Editor to Compose Messages" is enabled. This will add a tab "Insert" to the new message window.

Click on "Insert" select "Image" and then browse to the jpg/image on your HD.

This isn't cut and paste, but still another way to include images in email, other than attaching.

I hope this helps you, and please post back if you have more questions.

    Ramona :D

    Hi Ramona,

Sorry about the 'o' in place of the 'a'last message. In your name.

Well I did all the things you suggested.
HTML Editor to Compose Messages is enabled.
    Forward Messages Inline is selected.
    View Attachment Inline is checked.
With all this done I sent two emails to myself using both the copy/paste and the insert methods.
Neither came back with an image. When I opened the messages I opened to this link.

Part 1.3 Type: Hypertext Markup Language (text/html)Encoding: 7bit

When I clicked on this a new Netscape Navigator window opened with this in the location bar.

For my copy and paste attempt:
    mailbox:/C|/ProgramFiles/Netscape/Users/batroof/mail/Inbox?id=3C680F34.2066A733%40gobrainstorm.net&number=53819&part=1.3

    For my insert attempt:
    mailbox:/C|/ProgramFiles/Netscape/Users/batroof/mail/Inbox?id=3C680FCA.CDE157C9%40gobrainstorm.net&number=119553&part=1.3

    Still no image.

Sorry this is taking so much of your time. Let me know if you think it is time to start fooling with the preferences? I always fear the dreaded - worse then when I started- syndrom.

    Thanks,

    Troof

    Hey Troof,

I can relate to your syndrome! ;)

Let's check another setting in Preferences. Expand "Navigator" and scroll down to
    "Hypertext Markup Language "

    Are these your settings:

    Extension: HTML HTM SHTML
    MIME Type: text/html
    Handled by: Netscape (internal)

Let's also take a look at your prefs.js file.

    With Communicator closed:
    Make a copy/backup of your prefs.js file.

    Open Notepad
    Click on File/Open
    Browse to C:\Program Files\Netscape\Users\yourusername.... prefs.js

    Look for this line:
    user_pref( "mail.file_attach_binary ", true);

If the line isn't there add it to the file, then click on "Save" and close your prefs.js file. You can copy the above and paste it into the file, in order to avoid a typo.

If the line is there, but shows "false" instead of "true ", then change to "true ".

Test your mail again and lemmeno if this helps!

    Hi again,

Hooray, except……. Well the good news is I am now among those who can receive images pasted to their emails. Now bear with me here for a bit. All of these were as you said.
    Extension: HTML HTM SHTML
    MIME Type: text/html
    Handled by: Netscape (internal)

Then I did as you suggested and checked my prefs.js file and did not find user_pref ( "mail.file_attach_binary ", true) listed. I then pasted the line into the file and saved and closed.
I then sent myself an email with a photo pasted into it. After receiving it and opening it I still had no image. I then went back to the prefs.js file to check that the line was still there. It was there. Then I was reading some of the lines and spotted the line user pref ( "mail.inline attatchments ", false). So just for the heck of it I changed the false to true in this line. Anyhow after testing the mail again it actually worked and I had a photo in the body of the email. O.K. here comes the funny part. I went back to the prefs.js file and the line that I changed (user pref( "mail.inline attachments ", true) was no longer listed. Everything is still functioning correctly. One last question. Why did this line disappear?
Thanks for all your help. Would never have figured this one out that for sure. I usually don't go to those dark places. Thanks for being my light.
    Troof:)

    Troof!

Way to go, and so glad you can send and receive images.

Now, about that disappearing Inline preference in your prefs.js file. That is indeed a mystery, as some folks have it and some folks don't. Why it disappears shall remain a mystery.
