I'm in the situation of having to wipe my hard drive and re-build (don't ask how not good my day is). I want to save my emails to floppies before I do that, but I can't locate them.

I have Windows ME and Netscape6; I do not have a "users" folder in Netscape, and as I'm working in DOS presently, I can't use Windows' Find program.

Does anyone have any idea where the mail files might be? or what the DOS command for "find" is?

    Look here:

    C:\Windows\Application Data\Mozilla\Profiles\<profile name>\<*.slt>\mail\mail_account_name

of course it will the short file name for it.

Your mail folders are the files with no extension, such as "inbox ". the *.msf files are index files, and will be rebuilt once you are up and running again with a new profile, so there is no need to copy them.

Thanks for the help- the directories are there alright. Now the problem is that when I try to open the directories in ...\mail\, I get the message that they are invalid directories.
I don't suppose you have any ideas that can help with this?
    Thanks again,
    Tom

No luck so far, as dos refuses to recognize the directories. I will look around during the day and see what turns up, as it should be possible.

In the meantime, is it possible for you to move the hard drive to another computer (as a second drive) and access it that way?

Thanks again for the help. I finally accessed the directories, and now I have a new problem: the files are too big to be saved to a floppy. Unfortunately, there doesn't seem to be a dos editor anymore, so I can't open the files and change or split them up. So I think those files may just be lost.
My computer is a laptop, and I think the only way to access the hard drive as a second drive is to pay someone a lot of money.
    Thanks again,
    Tom

You might try a dos zip program, such as pkzip v.2.50. You could try zipping each mail file and copying to floppy, after checking the size.

Googling for "pk250dos.exe" or "pk250dos" will locate pkzip for dos. IF the files are too large even after zipping, a file splitter would be necessary.

You have completely solved the problem.

Well, not completely, since I still have to wipe my hard drive and start from scratch, but with pkzip I was able to save the last files I really needed to. Pkzip allows disk spanning, so even the big files were no problem.

    Thanks for all the help.
