Could someone kindly outline the procedure for setting the Drive where NS 7.1 Inbox and corresponding folders is located?

It had been set on F drive - but started new ISP in January and now see all material is being stored on C - must have set itself up there when opened new account. C is almost full and would like to switch what has gone onto C onto F - and also keep going on F.

I've clicked every Option, Preference, Setting possibility but do not see where I can direct email (inbox, sent, etc.) to F - once I set up F I guess I can set up additional folders and copy C to F - but how to set up F?

    Welcome to the Forum, robfwoods!

    Rob,

This guideline should help with moving your Profiles to the F: drive:

Create a new Profile for Netscape 7, place it in the
    F:\Program Files\Netscape\Netscape folder
Copy all pertinent data from old Profile to New Profile

The following files would be my suggestions for "pertinent data ":

All Mail files without the MSF extension - These files contain the Mail
All Mail folders with an SBD extension - These folders contain the Subfolders
Delete the files with MSF extensions in the subfolders.

msgFilterRules.dat - Message Filters for the current server

    xxxxxxxx.s - Password data
    xxxxxxxx.w - Form Fill data
    abook.mab - Address Book
    bookmarks.html - Bookmarks
    cookies.txt - Cookies
    cookperm.txt - Cookie Manager/Cookie Permissions
    custom.dic - Dictionary
    history.mab - Collected Addresses
    key3.db - Security Certificates
    loginNames-aim.rdf - if applicable
    loginNames-icq.rdf - if applicable
    mailViews.dat - Current Message Views
search.rdf - Search Plugins in the Sidebar
training.dat - Junk Mail training data
user.js - If you have created the file, if not disregard
usercontent.css - If you have created the file, if not disregard
userchrome.css - If you have created the file, if not disregard

After using the NEW Profile(s) for a few days, and experiencing no problems:

Move the OLD Profiles folder for Netscape 7, from the C:\WINDOWS\Application Data\Mozilla\Profiles, to your Backup Folder.

    Next:
Delete the Profiles Folder in C:\WINDOWS\Application Data\Mozilla\Profiles, leaving the Mozilla Folder intact, and containing two files: pluginreg.dat and registry.dat. Do not remove these two files from the Mozilla Folder.

Thanks mucho for a thorough and thoughtful answer!

I'll definitely go that route but with still one question - there is no way to change the operating storage location for folders with the editing of a present account via prefs, options, etc.?

I am wondering - having not been familiar with profiles etc. - why - with someone that helped me a couple of years ago with putting email on the F drive (C is for pther programs) - that when I changed ISPs in Jan and set up a new 'account' I do not recall ever being asked anything about where I wanted to anchor the stuff - if you happen to know what happened I'd be interested to know - thanks

    Rob,

For Mail, Bookmarks, and Cache you can edit the prefs.js file if you desire to change the location. Or if you are moving a Profile from one OS to another, you must also edit the prefs.js file to change the path, e.g., from Windows 98 to Windows XP, etc. However, you asked to change the Profiles location, for which I have given you a guideline...

When you changed ISP's, did you create a new Profile? If so, then Netscape automatically enters the Profiles folder location for the current path.

Let us know if you have more questions.

P.S. I just have to add, that Netscape 7.1 is obsolete now, and you really need to seriously consider updating your browser. Netscape 7.1 has a serious resource leak, bugs, and security vulnerabilities which have been addressed in current browsers. I always suggest Firefox and Thunderbird, or Mozilla 1.7.8. Mozilla 1.7.9 is due out in the very near future, as a Release Candidate was put on the web today.

    Thanks again

Yes - you did answer the question that I originally asked - was just trying to learn a bit more.

When I changed ISP's - I made a new 'account' via the simple 'accounts and settings' system - and there it never asked me anything - but I assume it used the C drive because that is where the Netscape program is - the person who had put it on 'F' must have gone thru some extra gymnastics

    ++++

But you raise a bigger question that I now ask myself - should I bother fooling around with this - or move to the Mozilla 1.7.9 as soon as available?

I have stuck with Netscape mail after starting with it in 1997 and using the browser as well. The 'world' as it is - has forced me over to IE (have tried things like Firefox but didn't work with MLB baseball broadcasts plus this and that - unfortunately the practical world has pushed almost all websites to prioritize compatibility with IE).

But have resisted Outlook as never like it when forced to use on someone's computer - and I understand there are security issues - plus it seems to always be a magnet for raging hackers. But more importantly I have 8 years of very important email archives - I use them very often - business and personal - and want to be able to use them efficiently.

So my question is: if I move over to Mozilla can I really effectively import the 3 sets of 'inboxes' I now have stored (Netscape 4.2 mail inbox and the 2 7.1's with the 2 different ISP's) - and actually integrate them so that a search will run thru the whole bunch at the same time?

(When I changed ISP's and tried to import from 7.1 material from the previous - it continually jammed. When I moved to 7.1 - it didn't want to know anything about 4.2 mail material.)

Fortunately - the system is presently 'working' so I can wait a bit.

PS -- When moving to Mozilla - can I keep the 7.1 running until I am sure everything is working?

Oh heck Rob, I understood you were looking for more info... :)

That's a big fat YES, move to Mozilla 1.7.9!

Yes, you can import 3 sets of Inboxes, after first renaming them, in order that they don't overwrite any existing Mail you may have received in Mozilla 1.7.9.

The Inboxes will appear in Mozilla Mail exactly as you have named them, e.g., 42Inbox, 71inbox1, 71inbox2, or whatever you need to do to recognize the Mail. You won't be able to search through them at the same time unless you copy all the messages to one folder, which isn't a good idea.

There is no problem with Netscape, Mozilla, or Thunderbird recognizing Communicator Mail, as long as you don't copy over the SNM files. For what you wish to do, I would do it manually, so you have total control.

Absolutely, Mozilla and Netscape 7.1 run together with no problems. You can even have both browsers open simultaneously. You MUST, however, have unique Profiles.
That's terrific, and I hope we'll be seeing you often! Feel free to join in at any time...
