You sound very experienced in Netscape! I have Netscape 7.02 and Windows2000. Recently, I have had a problem with Netscape freezing when I try to close Mail. The only way to exit then, is to use Task Manager. When I choose close task, it will then close it after giving me a message that it is not closing. Task Manager also shows that Netscape is running. (Not that it is not responding). I used Spybot to clean my system (after this was suggested at techguy.com. This didn't help my problem, although I am glad to learn of this software!

    Hi jihf

Most of the time, one of the following two....
Themes... use Modern, lacks color, but very stable.
    Email settings....
In Mail and Newsgroup Account Settings...
    Server Settings...
DISABLE "Empty Trash on Exit ". This is a MUST in IMAP accounts, 50/50 for POP3 accounts. Post back with results.

I've been having similar problems, but I'm using Win 98 SE with Netscape 7.02, have never used any of the other themes, and Empty Trash on Exit has never been checked.

I think my situation is Javascript-related, since the problem actually seems to start when a webpage opens that has a lot of "moving parts" and the Java "console" appears on the quick-launch window. Netscape may not freeze right away, but things just won't run right after this. I've noticed that if I close Netscape after I leave the Java page and just open it again things will run much more smoothly.

    Hi bentley,

I see that you are an "Experienced" user, so may I assume that you have Java and Javascript enabled in Preferences?

What Version of Java are you using? I also run Windows 98SE with Netscape 7.02, and have the Sun Java Plugin, Version 1.4.1_02 installed. There is a newer version, however: 1.4.1_03 . I have not experienced what you describe. Does this happen on every Java laden site, or only infrequently?

What you describe happened fairly frequently in Communicator, but infrequently in 7.02.

    Welcome to the Forum, jihf

    Hi jihf,

In addition to the two most common causes, which Dennis L has laid out for you, you might also check out these workarounds:

    Do a "Find" for *.MSF
    Delete all Files found

If no joy and you have no Mozilla, no Mozilla Firebird, and only ONE Netscape Profile:

    Close Netscape
    Delete the registry.dat file
    the file is located in:
    C:\Documents and Settings\user_name\Application Data\Mozilla
When you restart Netscape the Profile Manager will ask for a new Profile
Rename using the exact same name
You may lose some of your Preferences

If none of the above solve your problem, then Create a new Profile.

    Java

Interesting question, Ramona. I can't remember what version of Java I've got, and the problem has only happened on the machine at my office. I'll have to check on Monday and report back.

And now that you mention it, I think it only happens on a certain group of Java-heavy websites, although I hadn't really taken note of that fact. I'll have to keep a closer eye on it.

    Hi bentley,

Make a note of the links that give you problems. Then we can try them here to see if it is your problem or the webmaster's problem. By that, I mean if the webmaster is using proprietary coding.

    Dennis L., Bentley & Ramona

I thought I had my problem solved after I read a post on techguy about Java being a problem, and after reading how Ramona installs Netscape without any plug-ins. I went and deleted Netscape and then java, realplayer and a couple of others and then reinstalled Netscape with only the basics. I tried mail and the browser and everything seemed fine. Then, as I worked longer on my computer, it started happening again! Now, I have gone in and unchecked "empty trash" and noticed I have had the Modern Theme on always. I have downloaded Java from the Java site and RealOne and installed them. I then tried a site that uses Java, I opened my mail and everything seems fine! So, I am not sure what has happened. I will check out what Ramona suggested tomorrow. I didn't understand what Ramona meant about "if no joy." Thank you for your help!

    Hi jihf,
That means: if the workaround or solution doesn't work. If it doesn't work, then you feel no happiness, or joy... :(

Do you have Netscape Webmail installed in Netscape Mail. My experience has been, if I am lucky to connect, that I will not be able to exit Netscape or go from Mail to Navigator. I could get around the problem by right clicking on the item on the toolbar, next to the Start button, and try to Exit from there. It usually worked.
And, I was sure that Webmail was the problem, because if I removed the account, everything was back to normal.

    Java and lockups

I haven't had a chance to do any messing around in Netscape this week, but I did check and I'm using the older (.3 as opposed to .4) version of Java. When I get some time I'll download the update and see whether that makes a difference.

The website that seems to spawn the most consistent Java-related problems is the Intellicast Radar loop.

    Boston Radar Java-Loop

Of course this is an intermittant problem, so there's no telling what you'll get.

    Hi bentley,

I'm using Ver. 1.4.1_02, and had no problems with either 7.02 or Opera 7.11, accessing the site.

Check your Java configuration "Advanced Tab ", to ensure that you have enabled the Sun Java Plugin and not the default.

I'm sure you have the appropriate DLL files in your Netscape Plugins Folder:
    NPJava11.dll
    NPJava12.dll
    NPJava13.dll
    NPJava32.dll
    NPJPI141_03.dll
    NPOJI610.dll

I'm not Java literate, and couldn't tell by the source code whether or not this page is using proprietary coding, perhaps someone in the know can ...

    the Netscape/Java problem

Just as an update, I did indeed have all the correct drivers, but that website was still locking up.

One day while working on something that only required minor attention, I totally removed all evidence of Java plugins and started over from scratch. Without messing with Netscape at all, I downloaded the newest version of 1.4.1_03 from the Java Sun website, installed it, and everything works like a charm now.

Just because it worked so well, I did the same on one of the other computers I use, and I notice that Java-heavy sites load much more smoothly.

    Hi bentley,

So glad to hear that your Java woes are over! So no problems with the new Java Version? That's good news indeed, and thanks for the feedback.
