I know it is old, but I am using Netscape Communicator 4.76, and I love it. Recently, when I am browsing and on any website, and I click on a link in that screen, it often happens that I get an error message--- "Netscape.exe has caused an error. Netscape will now close ". I have no choice but to clk on Close;---then I can re-open Netscape and it will run OK until the above is repeated.
My main executable program file is Netscape.exe version, -- 4.76.0.11. I suspect it somehow has become corrupted. Can anyone [Ramona-thanks!] send me an e-mail with this netscape.exe v4.76 file as an attachment? I will try substituting to see if it solves the problem.
    My e-mail address is Leemit@att.net.
Thank you, thank you! Any other suggestions will be welcome.-------Lee Mitchell

    Lee,

Try a clean install of Netscape. Copy your profile and start over. Here are the instructions for that. Here is the link for downloading Netscape.

MinnMike: Thanks for the reply. I have printed out the instructions for a clean install, and noted the URL to do the download. I just thought that because the error message I am getting identified the file that caused the error, I could maybe solve the problem by replacing that particular file. It is the executable PROGRAM FILE [NOT downloaded installable file] netscape.exe (version 4.76.0.11 which is perhaps double identified by its size of 5.31 MB, more or less). Can any one send me a copy?
BTW, your message indicated you have Netscape 7.1 and 4.78. Is it possible to have both on the same machine? Do they mix up and confuse one another? please advise how to have both and not get into trouble! Thanx.--------Lee

    Lee,

Netscape 6.x and 7.x are not upgrades to versions 4.x and lower. They are separate programs and do run independant of one another. I ofetn have both programs running with no problems. I use Netscape 7 for all my browsing and 4.78 for my mail and newsgroups. I wasn't ready to change my mail program, so I kept 4.78. It has worked out really good for me.

As far as the .exe file that you mention, it should be in the download. I checked my 4.78 download and Netscape.exe is listed in the folder. I think the size was about 5.25 MB. You may want to try downloading 4.76 and taking a look at the contents. I'm sure you will find the .exe file there.

    Hi Lee,

What you might try first, rather than reinstalling Communicator:

    Close Netscape
Open Windows Explorer and navigate to:
    C:\WINDOWS\nsreg.dat
Delete the file... if you prefer you can rename the file Xnsreg.dat

    Start Netscape
The Profile Manager will prompt to create a new Profile
Use the exact Profile name as your existing Profile, and Netscape will recognize it. This is the most successful fix for the netscape.exe error. You might want to take a look at this page: Netscape.exe has caused an error in...

I seriously doubt that replacing the netscape.exe file will have any effect on your error, and in fact may corrupt the application. The netscape.exe error points to the Netscape program, not that specific file.

Let us know if you need additional help.

Ramona and MMike: Thanx much for your replys!! I will try the fixes your have suggested, and in extremis do a clean re-install of 4.76. But I also intend in the future to install 7.1 and have two versions on my machine ala Mike. BTW, is 7.1 really an improvement over 4.7x? Do you guys really like 7.1?

    Lee,

I can only speak about the browser of 7 since I don't use the mail program. I find that the browser is quicker and able to load sites that only IE (ugh) could open. Before installing 7, I had to open some sites with IE because 4.78 just couldn't open it correctly. Now Netscape can handle those sites. I'm sure there are still IE sites out there, I just haven't run across any for quite awhile. I would definitely recommend it.

Let us know how your error message comes out.

    Hi Lee,

I will echo Mike's comments! I run Communicator 4.79, Netscape 7.1, and Mozilla 1.5b. Right now I have all three apps. open. They behave themselves as long as you have unique Profiles for Mozilla and Netscape 7.1, and you don't install updates over existing versions. That will create havoc.

If you have more questions, ask away!

Thank you, thank you Mike and Ramona. You guys are the greatest. I guess we can close this thread. ---But I will inquire again when I get in trouble down the road with newly loaded 7.1!
