    I noticed an anamoly in downloading: (this happened on two occasions) that is, when I tried to download a file from Zdnet and when I click it the page goes back to itself and never downloads the file it is supposed to. the same thing happened also at the Creativelabs site. I wonder if anyone else has the same problem.

    Hi, Moorty,

    From your other thread HERE I see you solved your Netscape 7 problem with exe files downloading with an added .jpg extension by renaming the mimetypes.rdf file in your .SLT folder, so this is a new problem?

    I have "somewhat" of a similar problem with Mozilla 1.0.1 when trying to open a page that uses the Windows Media Player 6.4 plugin (it drops me back to the previous page) which I solved by opening the link in a new window (right-click the link, select "open in new window ") so that's something to try.

    It would help if you gave us a link to the page and the type of file you are trying to download. Also see if Right-clicking the link and selecting "save link target as" lets you download.

    Hi Alice:

    Thanks for your reply. Here is an example of an .exe file that you could try to download. The "save target as" does work, as you suggested, but "open in a new window" didn't.

    Hi Moorty,

    Check this Preference Setting:

    Navigator|Downloads
    Enable: Open Progress Window

    It could be that your file is downloading, without benefit of the Progress Window, if you have enabled "Don't Open Anything ".

    Just a guess...

    I checked the "save target as" once again. Whate it does download is not the .exe file but a "redir" file which takes me back to where I was before. So, that didn't work either.

    There is a javascript on the page to which you are redirected, http://downloads-zdnet.com.com/3001-2139-6309806.html which begins:
    <script language= "JavaScript" type= "text/javascript "><!--
    function beginDownload() {
    newlocation = "http://www.jwsoftware.co.uk/Downloads/MP3Player/MP3Player.exe ";

    Possibly you have disabled a Netscape preference that is needed for the download to begin? Go to Edit Preferences and under Advanced, select "Scripts and Plugins" and make sure "Enable Javascript for Navigator" is checked and that "open a link in a new window" is also selected. Close all Netscape windows and then reopen Netscape and see what happens.

    Hi Alice:

    They were both already checked.

    Hi Moorty,

    Make sure you have cookies enabled since this site may require it. I checked the actual Download Now link on the page you gave and it contains lots of data that looked to me like cookie ID information.

    Go to Edit Preferences Privacy and Security, Cookies, and check one of the Enable Cookies choices (I have "Enable cookies for the originating website only" selected.)

    If that doesn't do the trick then it might help if you explain exactly what happens when you go to this link:
    http://downloads-zdnet.com.com/3001-2139-6309806.html -This is the page where the Download Now" button takes you, which starts the download for
    MP3 Player for MiniDisc Recording 1.8

    In my case, a few seconds after I get to the above page, I see a Windows "save" box for MP3Player.exe with the choice to SAVE or CANCEL. If I cancel the download, then click the browser Reload button, the save box comes up again.

    Hi Alice:

    In my preferences "Enable all cookies" was checked. As per your suggestion, I changed it to "enable cookies for the originating site only" and it worked. I could get the download browser window without any problem. I think (and hope) this has solved my problem.

    Thank you very much for your help.

    The link I gave you that starts the download is from the page you get redirected to, when you click the "Download Now" button at http://downloads-zdnet.com.com/3000-2139-6309806.html?tag=lst-0-1

    -the Download Now button is not redirecting you, for some reason.

    When I Right-click the "Download now" button and copy the link location, it shows the following information (all one line, without the quotes):

    "http://downloads-zdnet.com.com/redir?pid=6309806&merid=
    78000&mfgid=78000&ltype=dl_dlnow&lop=link&edId=2&siteId=
    2&oId=3000-2139-6309806&ontId=2139&destUrl=%2F3001-2139-6309806.htm "

    I'll see if I can find out anything. I hope someone else has an idea in the meantime.
