How can I stop NS from dialing up when I boot up? I have Win 98 and NS 4.80.

    Welcome to the Forum, Pete111!

    Hi Pete,

    Check the settings in:
    Start|Settings|Control Panel|Internet Options
    Click on Connections tab
    Enable: Never dial a connection

Also check your RealPlayer configuration, if you opted for the player. The program will place a shortcut in the Startup folder, unless you disable the feature.

Let us know if you continue to have problems.

Thanks, Ramona. However, what I was doing before was as follows: I had the NS Navigator icon in the Quick Launch area of the Taskbar. I could just click once and NS would be launched and it would access the Internet. However, when I do what you suggested (and it is not a bad suggestion at all) I cannot get on the 'Net with Netscape with one click from Quick Launch. Is there a way I can tweak this? Thanks again.

    Hi Peter,

So, it wasn't RealPlayer that was triggering your dialup on boot?

To do the one-click from the Quick Tray Netscape Icon:
    In Internet Options select:
Dial whenever an Internet Option is not present

This should launch Netscape and DUN...

    HTH,

    Ramona :D

I guess I'm licked. Unless I check Never Dial a Connection every time I boot up the PC automatically dials up. Previously there was no dialup unless I I clicked the NS icon and then it would dial properly. I installed Zone Alarm and wonder whether that had anything to do with this automatic dialup on booting.

Sometimes I wonder how a change takes place in a system that was never intended. In misconfig nothing shows nothing other than what should be checked. Realplay is unchecked and has been.

    Hi Pete,

I agree, it's so annoying that many of the applications are set to "Phone Home" by default, and thus causing the problem that you are experiencing.

The AIM component is set to start automatically by default on system startup, so you need to disable. While Netscape 7 is running, go to Edit | Preferences, and select the Instant Messenger item in the pane on the left hand side of the Preferences window. You should then see, at the top of the Preferences window, a checkbox labelled "Launch automatically at system start ". This box is checked by default.

Uncheck the option, and Netscape will not start the AIM component on system startup, and in turn, will no longer prompt you to dial up your Internet connection. That is, if this is your problem....

If you have QuickLaunch enabled, disable it to see if this is the culprit.

    Check in:
    C:\WINDOWS\Start Menu\StartUp
Is there a program listed there that shouldn't be?

    HTH,

    Ramona :D

Had a visitor who knows much more about PCs than I do. Found out it was Zone Alarm after all. Since he has not worked much with Zone Alarm the fix we came up with is too uncheck Zone Alarm in Start Up and access it when going on the 'Net.

That works. Probably a Guru who knows Zone Alarm could tell us how to modify it; however, it is not critical at this point. Thanks, Ramona for your suggestions.

    Hi Pete,

Thanks for getting back to us, with your startup problem.

So ZA was the culprit? What Ver. of ZA do you use. I was also curious to know if you disabled ZA in Windows Startup or disabled the "Load ZoneAlarm at Startup" configuration within the ZA program itself?

This was a common problem in early Versions of ZA, but not so frequent with the later Versions.

    Ramona :D

    EDIT:
I will have to rescind my last statement, as after poking around on the ZA site, found this information:

    4. Why is ZoneAlarm causing my computer to dial out (DNS lookup)?

ZoneAlarm is performing a DNS lookup that was not completed during a previous session (these are done automatically for Registration changes, Check For Updates, and when adding a site to a Zone).

Normally, ZoneAlarm waits until a user has established an Internet connection before performing the DNS lookup. However, an issue with the some 3.1 releases is that they may not wait for an Internet connection before attempting the DNS lookup. On some computers with auto-dialers set up, this lookup may cause the auto-dialer to pop up when the system is started.

This will be corrected in the next release of ZoneAlarm. Currently the only workaround is to set your browser connection properties to never dial a connection.
    ---

This would only apply to Version 3.x

Thanks, Ramona. I looked and looked but didn't find what you did. Oh, well!

I go on the 'Net and then activate Zone Alarm. Hope the fix comes soon. Since I have the 3.1 free version I'll have to keep on the lookout.

    Hi Pete,

Instead of waiting until you go on the Net, activate ZA before you go online.

Did you disabled ZA from opening at Startup in the ZA Preferences? Once you boot the PC, open Zone Alarm, then go online. I have a ZA shortcut in the Quick Tray, which I use once I do a cold boot.

    Ramona :D

    EDIT:
I should add, you would want to use the manual dialup, in order to accomplish the above. I'm sure you know this, but for the benefit of those who might not...

Although I downloaded my ZoneAlarm recently I found that a later version has been developed. I uninstalled the older version and installed the newer version and so far it is operating OK. Thanks again, Ramona, for your diligence in this matter. Have a good one!

    Hi Pete,

I'm glad to hear that your problem was resolved by installing the latest Ver. of ZA! :)

Thanks for getting back to us and giving us the solution... much appreciated.

Ach, I shpoke to soon. When the newer version is in the startup it still has the dialup bug.

I'll wait a while and see whether it is corrected once and for all. Finis.

    Hi Pete,

Am I assuming correctly, that you are using Version 3.1.395?

Sorry, Ramona. I did not realize you made another comment. I have version 3.1.024 of ZoneAlarm. I tried once or twice uninstalling it and downloading the more up-to-date version you mentioned but it doesn't seem to work.
