I was using NS7 with WinME and it installed fine.
I changed my OS to Win2000 and downloaded NS 7 both with and without the installer. It appeared to be a good download, but when I tried to install it, I kept getting the error -215 File is read only. Does anyone have any idea what this is all about?
I have a Pentium 4 2.5Ghz CPU with about 70 GB HDD space and 512 MB RAM. IE6 and other browsers work well.

    Welcome to the Forum caughtintheact!

    Hi caughtintheact,

Clear your C:\WINDOWS\Temp directory, and then see if the install fails.

Post back if you continue to have problems.

    Hi Ramona,
I tried your recommendation, but it didn't work. I got the same error which reads exactly as: error occurred during installation - Navigator: - 215 READ_ONLY.
I did delete my temp files from E:\WINNT\TEMP (My Win2000 installation is on my E drive) before I redownloaded the setup file. I downloaded all 27MB, and whent he installation started I got as far as installing the files then I got the error. I'm going to try the streamlined version Silly Dog and see what happens.

    Hello caughtintheact,
Do you have Netscape installed or running while installing?
Check if your have quick launch on, if so, exit Netscape completely (include Quick Launch) first.
If you have Netscape installed in your HD, try to uninstall it first.
If you have Netscape left in your HD (installed during WinME), but not yet installed into Windows 2000, try following...
    1. Delete all files and folders (except Plugins folder) in
    C:\Program Files\Netscape\Netscape 7
    (or your Netscape 7 folder)
    2. Then install Netscape.

(Note: you can also delete Plugins folder, but not necessary)

    Hi Antony,
Appreciate the advice. I have NS 7 (and 4.7)installed on my C drive in WinME, but I want to install it on my G drive in Win 2000 which is on the E drive.
I do not have quicklaunch enabled anywhere.
I really do not want to uninstall NS7 from my C drive as I use WinME once in a while and my IE is messed up, so I need NS, which works great.
The solution you are providing sounds like you must think there is a registry conflict, as there should be no other relationship of the C and E drives - they are also on separate HDDs.
I really need a solution that doesn't require uninstalling the WinME NS7. If there is none, I can forgo using NS in Win 2000, as I have a number of other browsers that are working fine. But I would like to solve this one for my own satisfaction, but a different way if possible.

    Hi CITA,

    From another Forum:

Are you installing Netscape with admin rights? If the permission is in Read Only, you will get the 215 error.

    Ramona,
Many thanks, I think this may be the problem as there are two profiles on the Win2000 with one being the administrator plus another one (the one I am using now). I'll figure out how to change it and then try the installation again.
    Cheers

    Error - 215 Read Only

Just tried again using administrator login, but got the same error. I haven't had time yet to try the streamlined version.

    caughtintheact,
Did you try to install Netscape 7.02 into the C: (or where original NS7.02 was with WinMe)?
OR Did you try to install it into another location?

Recall from my memory, Windows 2000 does search different drivers for applications even if not installed within Windows 2000.

When I had dual-OS in my computer (Win98SE and 2000), I usually install the same application (back then, was Netscape 4.74 or so) in the same location twice (installed under Win98Se then under Win2000), and that worked for me.

    Using NS7 across platforms

    Antony,
That solved it. After thinking about what you said, I just created a shortcut to NS7 on my C drive from my Win2000 OS and it worked fine except I need to find out where to put a duplicate set of my Mozilla profiles, as the cross platform method can't find the profiles on Drive C.
