I'm using Win98 and Netscape 7.2 - With Java enabled I can't access sites using
Java. With Java disabled I am able to enter the site ok - just don't receive whatever the sites java program was about. When I enter the site with java enabled the screen immediately completely fills with colored wavy horizontal lines. The cursor becomes a fairly large black outlined box that I can move around with the mouse. But I don't know what the cursor is sitting on because of the colored lines. I have to use the ctrl-alt-del keys to reboot. After reboot
I reset the java to disabled and I don' have the problem anymore(but I don't
get the advantage of the java pgm either). This happens on any site with java.
    I don't have a problem with javascript.
The about plugins in NS7.2 lists the following java pgms:
    NPJava11.dll
    NpJava12.dll
    NPJava32.dll
    NPJava131_02.dll
    NPOJ1600.dll

    Welcome to the Forum, breezer!

    breezer,

That's a rather outdated version of Java, and you might want to consider upgrading to Version JRE1.4.2_05. There have been some security fixes since that version was released.

Go to Start | Settings | Control Panel | Java Plug-in
In the Java Control Panel click on Browsers
    What is enabled?

Next: click on the Advanced tab
Does it show "Use Java Plug-in Default "?

    In Netscape:
    Edit | Preferences | Advanced
    Is "Java" enabled?

    Edit | Preferences | Advanced | Scripts & Plugins
    "Enable JavaScript for Navigator" checked?

    Let us know,

    Ramona

Thanks Ramona for the rapid response
When I go to start-settings-ctrl panel there is a java plugin 1.3.1_02 and when I double click it the same thing happens as I described above. I have to use ctrl-alt-del to reboot. Java is not enabled during this.
I went to the Sun-Java site and they show jre 1_5_0-windows-i596.exe as the latest Java.

    breezer,

Version 5.0 is fine, and you will want the Windows Offline Installation, Multi-language (jre-1_5_0-windows-i586.exe, 14.29 MB) .

First uninstall 1.3.1._02 using Add/Remove. Also look in Add/Remove for Web Start, as it is installed separately in the 1.3.1 version. It's been a while since I've used the 1.3 versions, but if you're not prompted to restart the PC, do so after the uninstall. Web Start is no long a separate program but packaged within the Plug-in.

Once both Java and Web Start are uninstalled and you have rebooted the PC, then install Java 5.0. This is the link for testing the Java install:

Let us know if you have further questions.

I tried all of your suggestions and none were successful. It was a lengthy
process what with all the reboots after making corrections.
Guess what? I found the problem strictly by luck! After viewing that squirrely
screen countless times with all its waving colors I got to thinking "what if its the screen resolution? ". It turns out it was the color selection from the Display section in the control panel. I had hi-color selected and when I changed it to
256 colors everything fell into place. I can read any java site without the screen busting up! Another good thing that happened is that I now have the latest java.
    Thanks for all your help.

    P. S.
After finding the solution I think the title to this post is definitely wrong! It should be "Display settings used with java cause lockup ".
The final display setting using 256 colors has created a new problem with
trying to display pictures. Ramona - should this be a separate post in another area?

    breezer,

I would try the Hardware Forum, as those folks are a whiz when it comes to this type of problem.
