I recently upgraded from w\98SE to XP and Netscape 4.76 to 7.1. Now I have been advised (not on this Forum) that users "in the know" use 4.76 for email and avoid 7.1 because it is too buggy.
That has not yet been my experience. Does anyone have any comments on that?

    Lochinvar,

Since Netscape 7.1 is not an upgrade to 4.x, you should have both on your system. That being said, I use Netscape 7 for browsing and 4.78 for my email/newsgroups. I have heard that the new email program works for some and others do have some problems with it. Personally, I choose to keep my mail in 4.78 because I like the program (it's been error free) and I'm just comfortable with it.

Just keep an up to date backup of your profile just in case it does act up. Better safe then sorry.

    Mike

There is no doubt that Mail was quite untrustworthy in NS6.x, but I never had a problem. It is not a bad idea to know where your Profile is located, so that you can go and do some minor surgery. Ramona's website has this to tell.

    For Windows 2000/Windows XP
    C:\Documents and Settings\user_name\Application Data\Mozilla\Profiles\profilename\xxxxxxxx.slt
NOTE: These files are hidden by default.
    To see hidden files:
    1. On the Tools menu in Windows Explorer, click Folder Options
    2. Click the View tab
    3. Under Hidden files and folders, click Show hidden files and folders

This guilty file is Inbox.msf, the header file(Inbox.snm is the equivalent in NS4.x) in your Mail account folder.
The problem has diminished mainly because users are treating 7.1 as a different program from 4.x. It is not an update, so you cannot install over the early version, without possible problems, and you cannot reuse the profile of previous version. That's where you can run into trouble.
Most people have only one mail account, but in NS7.1, you can have as many as you can, and keep the mail separate. It drives me batty to have mail from every account in one place. And, 7.1 has a pretty decent Spam(Junk) Controls, and for someone who gets up to thirty of those per day, it is extremely welcome.
Just keep 4.x, but use both for mail. That's the only way to find out if you have problems or not.

Thank you for all the informative replies. I think I will keep my present arrangement (I have three Inboxes on 7.1) and watch for any bugs. Hopefully you won`t hear from me again on this matter...
What does the extension .msf stand for? I have already deleted a ton of stuff with that designation when importing from Outlook Express.
