Netscape 7.1 released

Netscape 7.1 is now officially available...

For Windows users (English)

Netscape 7.1 (Full, 29.2MB)
Netscape 7.1 (PROMO, 29.2MB) I have no idea what it is

For MacOS X users (English)
Netscape 7.1 (full, 18.3MB)

For Linux 2.2 users (English)
Netscape 7.1 (full, 16.4MB)

 

Sorry to post so much -- saw this after last two posts.

Really tearing my hair out now since I ordered the 7.02 disk last night and obviously would prefer the 7.1

I assume there's no way to contact them about changing it. hahaha...

Big question, is it any real improvement?

I expect to see *lots* of improvements over 7.02 simply 7.1 is based on Mozilla 1.4 and 7.02 is based on Mozilla 1.0.2.

I have yet to install it myself, currently I am gathering user feedbacks on 7.1

Progress Report on Netscape 7.1

This is not to encourage or discourage users from installing Netscape 7.1, it is for information only:

Stability:
06/28/03 Installed
IPF errors in JS3250.DLL twice , with one MSVCRT.DLL triggered by clicking on Mail Icon, both Desktop Icon, and Mail Icon in Browser
06/29/03 - Same errors
06/30/03 - same errors on startup - too soon to give a fair rating on stability... I am using the Windows System Version of MSVCRT.DLL, and not newer versions which are sometimes installed with newer applications. Perhaps later in the week I can give a more informed opinion on stability.

Serious resource drain. With only 7.1 + Mail active, two TSR's (NAV and ZA) Resources can drop to 7 - 9% available

Workaround:
Mozilla bug #204374
Edit the prefs.js file to add the following script:
user_pref( "browser.cache.memory.capacity ", 4096);
NOTE: Back up the prefs.js file before editing. You can also make this edit via about:config, but for the less than experienced user, I would advise doing it via prefs.js.

This definitely improves available resouces, also clearing Cache frequently helps.

That's all I've found to date, but there very well may be more..

I strongly recommend creating a new Profile for Netscape 7.1. Users are reporting problems with Mail, if using the existing 7.x Profile. I also experienced this problem. Only after creating a unique Profile for 7.1 could I use Mail & Newsgroups...

 

Had no problems, Ramona, but the my profile was also used with Mozilla 1.4

Have increased cache.

Why is smoothscroll disabled by default, and why to button to switch on/off?

Keyboard and Mouse
Windows: Mousewheel scrolling does not work with all drivers.

This could be the reason for the scrolling to be turned off by default, but as I've seen no explanation for it, can't be sure.

Are you saying that you are sharing a Profile with Mozilla? I'm unclear as to whether or not this is what you mean. If that is the case, then read this, also from the Release Notes:

Preferences
Do not share a profile between Netscape and Mozilla browsers. Doing this can lead to unpredictable results, which may include loss of Search settings and preferences and unchecked growth of the Bookmarks file (large enough to freeze your system). It is best to create a new profile for each, or manually copy (and change the name) of an existing profile.

I was sharing a profile between N 7.02 and M 1.4rc2

I do not presently have any version of M installed.

I will be careful when I look at M 1.5a/b in a few weeks
