Several weeks ago I returned from vacation. When I accessed the internet I received the message: an error occured reading the startup configuration file. Please contact your administrator. I was able to connect to the internet using Netscape 7.0. What I found was not my normal home page but one of netscapes stating that I had successfully downloaded NS 7.1. Well, I thought my husband may have done it and didn't think anything about it until I spoke with him later. Of course, he had not. When I tried to access NS 7.0 again, it was no longer functioning. At this point I did check to see if NS 7.1 had been downloaded. It had not. So, I went ahead and downloaded it.(Not a wise move on my part!) After an extremely long time of waiting to download, I restarted to find out that I could no longer open Netscape nor anything that comes with NS 7.1. When I clicked on profile manager, mail & newsgroups, etc.,nothing happened.
With school fast approaching, I needed access to the internet. My son uses Internet Explorer (which works) but my daughter and I use Netscape. I found Netscape Communicator 4.7 on my hard drive and reinstalled it. Great it works but I miss 7.0. Now that I've downloaded 7.1 I think I may have deleted or uninstalled 7.0 because I can no longer find it on my computer.I found your forums and read what some others have experienced. I have deleted file pref.js and renamed prefs.bak to prefs.js. I no longer receive the startup configuration warning. I haved backed up the Profile Folder.I have set up a download folder on my hard drive and saved NS7.1.exe file to that folder. I have uninstalled NS7.1 using add/remove and rebooted the computer only to reinstall. Still does not work. I was wondering should I have removed 4.7 also. I would appreciate any help that could be given. Thank you!

It sounds like a mess. And, by now it is impossible to fix.
If 4.7 works keep it. It should have never been removed, in case strange things like they happened to you, do happen.

I am not sure if the fix from the link below would have helped

At this point I have no idea what you have . I would forget about 7.1, and reinstall 7.0x.
Your problems, as you found out, are with the profile, and now, going back and forth with 7.1, and most like the same profile, you will compound the problems.

Look at Ramona's Netscape solutions site, for problems and solutions for Netscape 7.x, and 4.x if needed.

    Welcome to the Forum, paltgkla!

    Hi paltgkla,

I think your best bet is to completely start over with Netscape, whichever Version you prefer. If Communicator 4.7x is working properly, then don't disturb it, but I would remove all vestiges of Netscape 7.x.

I would recommend a Clean Install, and a new Profile. See these Guidelines:
    Performing a Clean Install.

Please post back with any further questions.

    Ramona :D
