    Sigh.

Aren't they all preview releases these days?

Hopefully someone will post a review on how it compares to Mozilla.

    Hi tranquilo,

Yes, yet another PR, and they do all seem to be PR's! I agree, that the "Final Releases" are yet to be seen.

I think that Netscape/AOL-TimeWarner's theory is release what you have at hand in order to compete with the competition.

Here is one comparison I found on MozillaZine:

From "BetaTester" on MozillaZine: (Opinions only)

    Positive:

    - Shows ALL favicons/site icons in URL bar and tabs (example: hotmail, google).
    - Shows little chocolate chip cookie icon (cookie notification icon) between the offline security icons when visiting a site has set a cookie.
    - Finally separate window/taskbar icons for Navigator, Mail/News, Composer, Profile Manager, Adressbook, Help & Support, IM (Though pretty drab IMO, grey and white and dark, the only colored one is for the browser)

    Negative:

    - Removal of the BEST feature: Popup blocking. (Open unrequested windows) (But you knew that wouldn't stay)
    - Default personal toolbar includes 6 new icons (Mail, IM, Radio, MyNetscape, Search, Net2Phone there's Shop too, but not on by default) though these can all be removed after in preferences.
    - Stupid registration stuff

    Other:

    - Integrated ICQ with IM
    - Puts 4 shortcut icons on desktop: Netscape, Netscape Mail & Newsgroups, Instant Messenger, and of course, Free AOL

Other than that and the Mail/News account wizard having choises for AOL mail and Netscape Mail, nothing extraordinary different and nothing that would make me use Netscape over Mozilla. Way too used to my popup blocking to get rid of it now.
    :)

Here is a review from a Mac user:

Download today the new NS 7.0 Pr1 for Imac.
Very nice and more faster than NS 6, I think also more faster than Mozilla 1.0
Testing in MacOs X and MacOs 9.2 on many websites and have no crashes.
Email and news are very good, better than in NS 4.79.

You beat me to the post! Kinda difficult keeping up with you Ramona :D

Mac user says better news/mail....hmmm, think I'll download the thing and do a custom install. Any idea where I can download the complete package, rather than do a webinstall?

EDITED : Found complete package at Sillydog's Archive.

Watch this space for comments

    Hi Dr.JB,

The Link for the 30+MB complete package is in my very first post on this thread.

For anyone else interested in downloading from
    SillyDog701

Let us know what you think, and whether or not you are using the Mail and News feature.

    Thanks "Old Bean" :D

After more than 2 hours downloading, I had N7pr1 installed for all of 10 minutes. It is gone, never to return.

I can say that it has a few good points. The splash screen and desktop icons look sharp. Also, the enigmail gpg/pgp encryption plugin is rumored to work with N7pr1, so that is good. It is quick to uninstall.

Whatever is left of Nescape is possessed by the marketing geniuses at AOL.

    Hi tranquilo,

Thanks for the feedback, altho it doesn't sound very positive for Netscape 7.0 PR1. Bummer! The fact is, that the size is indeed daunting (30,872 KB) which with a slow DUN connection rate, could take 3 hours. I'm reading that Cable is about 1 minute. Wow, what a concept!

Mozilla 1.0 RC3, on the other hand, is only 10,638 KB. Makes a little more sense doesn't it? With a Custom install it would be an even smaller install. Not too sure I will be trying Netscape 7.0 just yet.

    Ramona :D

P.S. An interesting Review of Netscape 7.0 PR1 in The Register today.

Of course it was positive.... the splash screen looks good. lol...

The only positive thing is the enigmail gpg/pgp plugin is rumored to work. I cannot think of anything else. Perhaps if we all wish hard enough this AOL trash will go away and never come back. A perfectly good product ruined...

"Stripped Down Package" Netscape 7.0 PR1

If the 30+ MB download for Netscape 7.0 PR1 has kept any of you from trying the new Release, here is the good news:

Antony Shen (SillyDog701) has posted a 12.5 MB "Stripped Down Package ", available from this link:

    http://sillydog.org/narchive/sd/70pr1.html

Give us feedback, if anyone out there installs the browser.

    Thanks!

    Thanks Ramona,

There is one report of people with RealPlayer One installed.
The RealPlayer 8 is not included in the package, however, if you have RealPlayer One installed in your computer, it will try to associated* with it.
I personally do not have RealPlayer ONE (RealPlayer 8, and refuse to upgrade). No problem with it.

There are other people with RealPlayer ONE and do not have such problem.

    * "associated" might not be a good word, Netscape 7.0 PR1 will try to link with RealPlayer One, and there might have a problem of "installer expired ".

at the Netscape Unofficial FAQ website.
    Hope this helps.
