    I recently upgraded from Netscape 4.79 to 7.02. It worked fine for a couple of weeks, but stopped sending e-mails this week, although it receives fine. I am getting message to check mail & newsgroups settings. Have gone over these numerous times with tech advisors at my mail server. They have tried everything but to no avail, and have finally advised me to switch over to Outlook Express, which I have done temporarily just so I can send e-mail. I would prefer to stay with Netscape--any ideas how I can fix this problem? My server recently started up an automatic virus scan of e-mail, so I am wondering if that could have caused the problem. I also have Norton Internet Security 2003, but disabling it does not help. I have tried Outlook Express (it was already installed but not being used) and it works fine for sending. Also I was not able to import my Netscape 7.02 Inbox over to OE--I read a previous thread about this, but not sure how to follow directions.

    Welcome to the Forum, dpeters!

    Hi dpeters,

    Some settings to check:

    Edit - Mail & Newsgroups Account Settings

    In the Left pane, select "Outgoing Servers [SMTP] "
    Click "Advanced "
    Remove any duplicate server entries.

    Close Netscape
    Open Notepad | File | Open
    Browse to your prefs.js file, located in the salted file:
    C:\WINDOWS\Application Data\Mozilla\Profiles\profilename\*.slt
    (Depending on your OS)

    In the prefs.js file, check this script:

    user_pref( "mail.smtpservers ", "smtp1,smtp1,smtp1,smtp2 ");

    Remove the duplicates in the "smtp1,smtp1,smtp1,smtp2" string so it will read:

    user_pref( "mail.smtpservers ", "smtp1,smtp2 ");

    Or if you have only one Server then:

    user_pref( "mail.smtpservers ", "smtp1 ");

    Back up your prefs.js file before editing.

    What OS are you running?

    Are you using a Theme other than the default Modern Theme? If so revert back to the Modern Theme.

    Let us know if any of this helps.

    Thanks for your reply. We had already checked and removed duplicate server but it did not solve problem.

    I am still on modern theme, no change in that.

    I am using Windows 98 OS. Went to C:\Windows\Application Data\Mozilla\Profiles\default\crbmgrOc.slt\prefs.js and backed up prefs file. When I tried to open the prefs file, I got the following message box from "Windows Script Host ":

    Line 1
    Char 1
    Error: Invalid character
    Code 800A03F6
    Source: Microsoft JScript Compilation Error

    Is there another way to get inside this file, or does the above message indicate there is something wrong with it? I do not have option of opening it with another application (such as notepad)when I right click on it. I tried to open it with MS Dos, but nothing happened. There is probably some simple thing I am doing wrong, but don't know what it is.

    Hi dpeters,

    Note the above instructions on opening the prefs.js file:

    Close Netscape
    Open Notepad | File | Open
    Browse to your prefs.js file, located in the salted file:
    C:\WINDOWS\Application Data\Mozilla\Profiles\profilename\*.slt

    If this isn't clear...
    Open Notepad from Start | Programs | Accessories | Notepad
    Once Notepad is opened:
    Click on File
    Click on Open
    Go to your prefs.js file
    Click on Open

    Another workaround you might try:

    Do a "Find" for *.MSF
    Delete all the MSF files that are found

    For "Find ", click on Start | Find | Files or Folders

    Post back if this isn't clear or if you have more questions.

    Sorry!!- I missed a couple of lines in your instrucs--have now got prefs to open.

    It only showed smtp2, no duplications, so I tried a couple of things, as I'm not sure now what you mean by "server ". I tried changing to smtp1, smtp2;, then smtp1 alone. In either case, Netscape still won't send, but when I switch to Outlook as my default, it works fine. (The tech I spoke to earlier this week said they are having many many similar problems with Netscape 7.02.) I have changed back to smtp2 as it was originally set up. (I did not disable Norton Internet Security while I was doing all this, as I'm still not sure if that is a factor in this problem--doesn't seem to bother OE.)

    About the msf files, there is one for each folder on my Netscape 7.02 mail (the mail I copied over from Netscape 4.79 had a different extension). I haven't deleted these files yet-- before I do, can you advise if this will in any way affect accessing the mail I have still sitting on Netscape 7.02??
