Netscape 7.0 with Return Receipt Programs

I am trying to use serveral return receipt programs such as MSGTAG www.msgtag.com or sentthere www.sentthere.com with netscape 7 and I cannot get it to work using the netscape 7 mail client. These programs insert a tag into your outgoing message that then will notify you when your email is read. I believe they work by repointing your smtp mail server to their outgoing smtp server either on your PC or on the internet and it adds the tag. I tried this using other clients on my PC such as outlook and they work, just not nestscape 7. The say they work with netscape mail.

Is there a reason why you don't use Netscapes built in return receipt? "Sentthere" states it is compatable with Netscape Messenger, the outdate 4.xx version of Netscape. "Msgtag" asks only it is a smtp type program, best to contact the company. Netscape 7 return receipt can be setup to include all or just who you select. BUT it grants the receiver the option to decide if they want to participate. If they choose not to, this is there privilege and you do NOT receive the return receipt. The two programs you have chosen do not grant this privilege. This may upset someone receiving this type of email from you. Some firewalls could view this as a form of unauthorized communications and report it as such. You may want to inform recipients you are using this type of email tracking.

 

Dennis, thanks for the response. As you mentioned the built in Netscape return receipt does not always work with all email clients or if the user does not to accept the return receipt. Thats my reason for trying these other software packages. Can you download netscape messenger 4.xx alone and install it without disrupting the netscape 7 client so you can use both. In other words they would work off the same mailboxes.

It has been so long since I've used messenger / return receipt. I think it offered two options. Delivered to recipient's email server.. which requires no action by the receiver and "when opened" by the receiver, which grants the privilege to the receiver if they choose to acknowlege. You can download Netscape 4.80 and Release Notes . You may want to look for a self standing email client that can provide the email tracking you are looking for. Current email clients bundled with the popular browsers shy away from this type of tracking.
