I have netscape 6.23 and when I go from webpage to webpage sometimes the webpages won't load correctly. They'll load ontop of each other, so the screen looks all garbled and I can see a little of both web pages. I've contacted netscape and they say to delete cookies, etc. This is always their answer whenever I have a problem. But that doesn't help. The only way out of this problem is to shut netscape down completely and to go back into it. Very frustrating. Any suggestions?

    Welcome to the Forum, Melissa!

    Hi Melissa,

I hear your frustration, and yes, Netscape 6.2.3 is full of bugs. It could be that your video drivers need to be updated, but my advice would be to uninstall Netscape 6.2.3 and move up to Netscape 7.0 Final which is definitely more stable.

Probably not what you wanted to hear, but advice that is also being handed out by the Netscape Champions, on the Netscape Newsgroups.

There are different versions of Netscape 7.0 available now. The following are the three that I would recommend:

    Netscape 7.0 "Compact" 15 MB
    http://www.hmetzger.de/net7comp.html

    Netscape 7.0 "Streamline" 13 MB
Netscape 7.0 "Streamline - Stand Alone" 10.2 MB
    http://sillydog.org/narchive/sd/70.html

You might want to take a look at this page which outlines a "Clean " Unstall/install for Netscape 6/7.

Thanks for the advice. You're right, not what I wanted to hear, but kind of what I expected. Not sure about the video drivers. When I had 4.78 web sites loaded fine, although I had a problem with ebay locking up my system (which is why I upgraded).

I forgot to say that another answer from netscape for this problem is to create a new profile using profile manager. However when I went to do that I was taken to the ICQ website. Grrr..

I read the clean install instructions. I have some questions:
    1. It says to create a download folder and save netscape 7.0.exe... This is before deleting 6.23. So am I correct in that I go to the website, hit the download button and download before I delete netscape 6.23? In the past we tried to get rid of netscape completely and then use IE to download a new netscape. The last time however it was a bit of a problem (major problem).

    2. This is probably a silly question... under step 2: if you're having problems follow these steps. I am having problems so I assume I do these steps, but do I do these steps prior to downloading/installing netscape 7? I would think I do. It talks about deleting registry keys. Is that when you type "regedit" in RUN? Could you tell me how to delete the keys?
    3. it says to open profile manager and create a new profile, entering a new profile name. I've had problems with this in 6.23. Why is this important? Why can't I keep the same name as in 6.23?

I'm sorry for all these "dummy" questions.

Thanks so much for the help. I can't tell you how much I appreciate it!!

Me again. I just looked up the different versions of 7 and am confused. Other than having less info downloaded and taking up smaller space on your hard drive, why is it better to install the compact or streamline versions? Wouldn't it be better to have the full package? Thanks!

Whether you download the full package or not depends on your needs. Keep in mind the full package is about 32mb in size, and if you do not have a fast connection this will take a while to download.

I do believe at least one of the downloads Ramona referred you to includes the adblocker, which is a reason to consider it.

Yes, you should download Netscape 7 before you uninstall Netscape 6.23. Once N7 is downloaded, then you can uninstall N6.23 and install N7.

I recommend staying out of the registry unless you know what you are doing. Attempting a normal uninstall of N6.23, then following the rest of the clean install instructions before attempting to edit the registry would be the recommended path.

There is nothing preventing you from using the same name IF you have followed the instructions for a clean install, which states that you should delete your profile directory. But if you are having problems it is best to start fresh. Mail, bookmarks, addresses, etc. should be backed up before deleting the profile directory, assuming you wish to keep any of it.

However, you could keep your profile directory and attempt to use your old profile, and hope that it would work (it may).

As far as the Profile Manager, you should be able to find it on the start menu/programs/netscape.

All Netscape windows must be closed before you run the profile manager.

    Hi Melissa,

    That is correct.

Yes, considering the problems with 6.2.3, I would follow Step 2. However, as you are insecure about editing the Registry, skip that step. It is really for advanced users, and those entries will do no harm if left behind.

It says to open profile manager and create a new profile, entering a new profile name. I've had problems with this in 6.23. Why is this important? Why can't I keep the same name as in 6.23?

A new profile corrects a multitude of problems in Netscape. I would urge you to do so. Just follow the guidelines step by step. You might want to print out that particular section.

These are "beginner" questions, not "dummy" questions. Just fire away.

I see that tranquilo has answered also, but I did leave out my reasoning for using the Compact and Streamline versions of Netscape.

You can cut down on the size of the install with the "Full" package also, by doing a Custom install. However, the packages I recommended don't include the media players. My preference is to download those players separately, which gives you more control over the configuration. There are some definite plus factors, as tranquilo mentions , in the Compact version. It does include several features, which you would ordinarily need to install after the fact.

Take you time, and read about each version before making a decision.

I really appreciate all the help! My problem with getting the profile manager to work was that I didn't have all the netscape windows closed. (silly me, but I didn't know).

I'm going to upgrade and attempt to do a clean install as per the instructions. The only thing I'm not quite clear on is the profile manager. Do I go ahead and install 7 and then enter a new profile name under profile manager?

    Thanks again!

    Melissa :)

well, I just tried to uninstall 6.23 using add/remove and got an error. Specifically: error 161: uninstall log folder not found HKEY_local_machine\software\netscape\netscape\
    6\6.2.3(en)|uninstall|Uninstall Log folder

Now what? I didn't think I'd have a problem with this.

Also, when I saved netscape 7.0 to my HD it didn't take long at all. Is that normal? I was expecting it to take a long time since I chose the large version.

    Sorry for all these questions.

    Hi Melissa,

I was just getting ready to answer your questions in your previous post.

Did you delete any files prior to using the Add/Remove applet?

Let me know and we can go from there.

    Melissa,

    On your Netscape 7.0 download:

What site did you download from, and which Version?

Do you use DUN, or do you have broadband?

    Thanks,

Hi! I didn't delete any files yet at all. I wanted to use the add/remove to uninstall, but got that error which stumped me.

I downloaded 7.0 from netscape.com. I went to that website and hit on their key for downloading netscape 7.0. I was surprised when I saved it it only took minutes. I have a dial up account and usually downloading takes a long time.

    Melissa,

Netscape isn't finding your uninstall file, in the Registry.

    First suggestion:

    Reinstall 6.2.3
    Then try uninstalling again.

I think I need to add, that not only should you have Netscape closed, but you should close all programs running in the background. Especially your AntiVirus program. You can do this by using CTRL+Alt+Delete and closing everything except systray and Explorer. This always applies to uninstalling applications and installing applications.

    Let us know what happens.

Uggghhhh... :( redownloading 6.23 eh? if I don't have any other choice.

I checked and I did download the 246kb (actually 245 on mine) netscape. Makes sense.

    Mellisa,

One other workaround you might try, and that is:

    Start|Find|Files and Folders
    Type in: cd32.exe

Double click the file and see if Netscape 6.2.3 will uninstall. Let us know.

One other detail I've wondered about, and that is, do you meet the system requirements for Netscape 7.0:
    Pentium 233 MHz Processor
    64 MB RAM
    26 MB hard drive space

    Ramona,

Doesn't cd32.exe belong to N4.x? I believe that Netscape (or at least mozilla) uses mozillauninstall.exe. However, running that file alone probably won't work. Here, it only works if the following is run (this is what add/remove progams does):

    mozilla 1.1
    c:\windows\MozillaUninstall.exe /ua "1.1 (en) "

I suspect N6.23 is something similar. Installing then uninstalling N6.23 again is probably a good idea (it can't hurt).

Hi! You all have so much information! I'm so happy I found this site! My computer is a Penium II, 128 MB Ram, with 8,432.6 MB free hard drive space. I haven't reinstalled 6.23 because it got too late last night, but will look at it today.

    tranquilo,

You are so right, and you do have to pass a specific parameter to cd32.exe to run the uninstall. Late night posting is not always wise...

    Thanks,

    Ramona
