I just downloaded Netscape 6.2 on my XP machine and I am having problems downloading JPEG pict files. They save in a strange format that can not be read by my JPEG application. When I force it to save as a .JPG file, the JPEG application still is not able to open the file (some sort of incorrect header information error). Any ideas how to fix this? Thanks.

    Welcome to the Forum!

    Hi t.pascente,

I'm definitely not Windows XP literate, so I can only try to help you.

In what format are the downloaded files saved?
What program do you use to view images?

I think we will need that information before we can go further with this problem.

    Hello Ramona,
Thanks for your reply:) I'm actually using a program called Infranview. It opens all JPG, GIF etc files. Somehow Netscape6 saves JPEG files as some Netscape type of file and it can not be opened by Infranview or any other picture viewer. I have not used Netscape 6 on any other OS. On my old machine with Win98 I used Netscape 4.5 and I did not have this problem. Now that I have a new machine with XP (which I am just getting used to for the first time:mad: ) I can only use Netscape 6. Unfortunately Netscape 4.5 is not available for XP:( Thanks for any advice that you can offer.

    Tom,

I can tell you that on Windows 98SE, there is no problem with jpg/jpeg files and IrfanView. I have used 6.2.2, and currently Mozilla0.9.9, and have not been able to create what you describe. This is the second post today, for this problem with jpg files, so I'm not quite sure what's happening.

Communicator 4.79 is compatible with Windows XP, although it is not "officially" listed on the Netscape site. You can download 4.79 at any of these sites:

    http://sillydog.org/narchive/
    ftp://ftp.netscape.com/pub/communicator/english/

On this page, scroll down to the bottom of the page and select Download Without SmartDownload http://home.netscape.com/download/1126101/10000-en-win32-4.79-base-128_qual.html

I will do some checking and get back to you and deanst2 regarding the jpg/jpeg files.

    Let's backtrack

    Hi Tom,

After reading your posts again, I spotted something that made me wonder if you have IrfanView configured in Options|Extensions. Is there a tick beside JPG/JPEG/JPE? I'm sure you have it configured correctly, but just double checking. I used to get the same error in IView when trying to save a .clp file, until I realized I hadn't enabled it in Options.

What do your File Types show for JPG/JPEG, and is IrfanView the program associated for these files? While you're looking at file types, also check to see if there are any Mozilla files, and if by chance your image/jpeg files are associated.

    One more detail.......

    Tom,

What is the file extension on the downloaded JPG files, that IrfanView doesn't recognize?

    Thanks!

    Hi Ramona,

Thanks for the suggestion for checking in Infranview options. But actually after you told me that Netscape version 4.79 works with Xp I uninstalled the version 6.2 Netscape and downloaded/installed 4.79 Now it works and downloads JPEG files without any problems . :D

But now that I uninstalled version 6.2, I do not know the file type that it had created. I'll check in the trash to see if I can find the file, but I'm not sure its still there:confused: (I have Nortons installed and it may have wiped it for good). :(

    Ramona,

I dug the file out of the trash and found out it was a standard HTML file. But for some reason neither Infranview or Netscape could open it due to the header problem. Its as though the Netscape 6.2 application had some error in the way it formated the file.

    I hope this helps:)

    Hi Tom,

Well that is definitely a horse of a different color! In your Netscape 6 configuration:

    Preferences|Advanced|System
"Windows should use Netscape 6 to open these file types "
    Enable: HTML

Glad that you are happy with 4.79!

Thanks for all your help Ramona!!:D

One quick question, maybe you would not know the answer but....
Would you happen to know when 4.79 is available in other languages?
I'm running the english application on a Japanese OS. It work 99%, but there are some slight issues with the japanese characters that I can live with until the correct version comes out.

    Thanks!!:D

    Tom,

Communicator 4.78 is available in Japanese now.

    Download cc32d478.exe, 23,072 KB.

Here are the Release Notes for 4.78.

This Version, although unofficially, is also reported to be Windows XP compatible.

    Ramona,

Thanks for the information. I originally downloaded 4.78 Japanese but could not run the exe file. I think windows Xp had some problems with it and could not open it (just gave a whole bunch of error messages). I'll check out the release notes.

    Thanks again;)
