When in Netscape 6.2 email, I click on a Word file attachment and it opens it up in a weird, random combination of lower case letters and numbers with .doc extension, but it does not open up in original file name,
for example Resume3.doc will open up as t6szg4t9.DOC

Already tried the suggested changes to registered file types etc to no avail. When I "save" the file to disk and go to open it, it keeps its original file name. But in Netscape 4.75 I was able to just double-click the attached Word file and it would automatically open with its original file name intact. Apparently there is something different in the programming of NS6.2.1 so that one cannot do this anymore. I ran latest McAfee DAT file and scanned all HD's for viruses that may be lurking to change the word file name format, but found no viruses, all was clean.

I have tried everything I know to troubleshoot this and cannot find solution. Tried everything in Help Center FAQ's and have surfed web for hours trying to find a solution.

any ideas? I really need to get this fixed asap as I work with a huge volume of Word doc's.

My thanks to all who come up with the fix.

    Cheers!

Hi Dabrucci, and welcome to the Forum!

I recreated your experience with 6.2.1, and had the same thing happen with the file changing its name. How odd, but I have no idea as to why.

I too have had little success finding many articles on this occurrence. I'm still looking, and will get back to you if I find anything.

    Hi Ramona!

I appreciate your taking interest in trying to find a solution to this weird programming change by Netscape (the Netscape 4.x series email client allowed one to automatically open attached Word files instead of assigning a temporary file name to an original file name, why they changed this I do not know, doesnt make sense). I have also continued my search on the Web but cannot find a fix. Since I go through about 300-500 Word files per week, you can see my dilemma and concern for time it takes to save the file and then re-open it from its storage in a file folder, too many steps when a simple click to open in its original file name would do.

I hope there is a solution without having to re-program the Netscape program...maybe someone that is familiar with Netscape programming can compare the 4.75 version with the 6.2.1 version and see where the changes were and find a fix? Or if there is another part of this computer apart from Netscape program that can change how the Word file is opened? I even looked into MS Office 2000 Word help center for an answer and it wasnt there either. Seems like the temporary file name cannot be changed without re-programming the Netscape software.

In case this helps, my system is running O/S WIN ME 4.90.3000 build 3000 with an AMD Athlon 800MHz processor, 256MB RAM, Office 2000 Suite.

Thank you for your help! :)

    Hi Dabrucci,

Here's your opportunity to become involved in the future releases of Netscape 6. The below links have a list of the bugs, and information on where to report bugs.

    http://bugzilla.mozilla.org/duplicates.cgi
    http://www.gerbilbox.com/newzilla/mozilla/involved01.php

Report the bug and then also post on the Netscape 6 Newsgroup.

I'm certain Microsoft has a newsgroup for Word 2000. They may tell you it is a Netscape issue, but nevertheless, they also may have a workaround.

If you open the Word documents within Netscape 6.x (which is not recommended), it will firstly copied the file to temp folder and using a salted name. You can work on it.

It is always recommended that you save all sorts files to disk before opening.

    Ramona & Antony,

Thank you very much for your feedback and input.
Will report the problems and hope they can fix them and give functionality that existed with Netscape 4.7x program.

    :)

    Dabrucci,

FWIW, a reply I received on the Netscape 6 NG, re your problem with Word:
    ---

    Quite simple !

If you have chosen the file to be open (instead of save as ... which retains the given name) the NS assumes you do not want to have file being persistent on your system after being processed. So it loads the file to the temporary directory and physically opens it from there. But it changes/mangles the name during this process to be sure that the name does not collide with another on the same directory. Afterwards the file really stays where it has been loaded and you can get it through the Unveil Location button on the download dialog. :)
