Netscape 4.8

Use Netscape 4.8, 128 bit version as my browser and e-mail reader. Sometimes, the program splash screen will load and my homepage's log in screen appears but the home page never appears. SOmetimes, the mail says logging in and the ion box never opens. I terminate netscape but it still shows as running.

I use it on a dial up 56K modem on a HP Pavillion with 128MB of RAM. I have at least 30gig left on my hard drive.
I tired reinstallign on top of my current files but the install hangs. I tried closing other applications and running the install (as downlaoded from Netscape's site) and still it hangs. I do like IE-- too many security problems. I tried 7.0 but manys ites wont work with it and in another forum it would keep changing subject. I reverted to 4.79 and now 4.8

Hi subway-buff,

You are suffering from the "Phantom" Netscape. This is a bug which has yet to be addressed. Do a CAD (Ctrl+Alt+Del) and remove Netscape from the tasks list.

I'm not certain why you get the hangs when installing, but I can tell you that you will not solve your problem, by installing the program on top of obviously corrupt files.

Try this:
Close Netscape
Back up your Users Folder
Delete the nsreg.dat file
Located in C:\WINDOWS

Open Netscape
The Profile Manager will ask you to create a new Profile
Use the same name as the current Profile

Ramona, thansk for the reply. I did that and it would not delete. O even tried uninstalloing Netscape and that woudl hang. I finally used regedit to delete netscape in software in local machine and current user. I then reinstalled from the downloaded copy of 4.8. It reinstalled but now I still suffer the phantom problem and cant force my PC to use Messenger for my e-mail. I exported my messages to Eudora ori 5.1 paid mode. I went into control panel, internet options, prohram, e-mail and selecte netscape messenegr and saved the change but Eudora still comes up.
1- How can I solve the phantom problem since the cure did nto work?

2- How can I "tell" my PC to use messnger for e-mail.

3- Does anyone have a copy of 4.6,128 bit I can use. I use dial-up soe now huge attachments. I can take a link and download.
e-mail me iff suiite for my snail-mail for a CD if you have one.

Just my two cents worth here. I also had the troubles with the phantom process, but it was with 4.7. I upgraded to 4.78 and have not had one problem with it. Everything works just great. I now use 4.78 just for mail and newsgroups and 7 for my browser. 7 is much better with browsing then previous versions of Netscape.

I would suggest that you follow Ramona's instructions for a clean install. They can be found here. Follow all the steps. I have used them a couple times and they work perfectly.

Like I said, this is just my opinion and Ramona may have a better solution for you soon. Best of luck!

I tried the clean install. Did install but now I can not open more than one browser window without the Phanton Issue. I have reluctantly gone to IE and usigg Eudora 5.1 pro for my e-mail.
Thansk for the tips. Netscape still works on my other PCs and will suer as llong as it works right.

I tried Netscape 6 ,6.1,6.2 and 7.0 but had compatibility issues with my boomakred sites and the way it handled posts on forums.
I also tried Opera which immediately hung and had to delete via manual delete and registry edit.

Mozilla? i think this is just another version of 6.x and 7.x sdo I think I'd face the same issues I had with 6.x and 7.x

I found an old CD-ROM with Netscape 4.61.

I deleted 4.877 for thge second time, edired my registry and then did a clean install of 4.61 and it works! even saved my profile. I also managed to save my e-mail which i had previously exported top Outlook and Outlook Express.

I am a very ahppy camper today. Thank you forum. Thank you Ramona If I copudl I;'d give you a huge raise. You are great
