I have a 5 year old computer, Windows 98SE, Pent. 200MMX, 64m Ram, plenty of free space, Bellsouth DSL and have been using Netscape for 8 years. I've noticed lately that my internet surfing has slowed down with Netscape. My Netscape mail loads it's login screen twice before I can login and takes over a minute to load my messages overall (IE 5.5 takes only 6-8 seconds to login and get my Netscape mail). I've noticed more and more web sites won't load with Netscape but will with IE. I don't seem to have any problems with IE but Netscape is sure slow. Netscape 4.79 was faster. Any suggestions? SkeetF: Welcome to the board!

Your rig is almost exactly the same as mine was before I got my new one a couple months ago. I had 128MB of RAM, though. That could make a difference, although I doubt it's the solution.

I was using NS 4.79 then, and I'm using it now, too, and still like it. Can you go back to that version and see if it solves your problem?

Get back to us with any developments so we can all learn from them. Good luck.

    Hi SkeetF,

I had the same experience with 4.8 on an older Aptiva, 166 MHz, 64 MB RAM, 2 GB HD, Windows 95B. The Aptiva absolutely didn't like 4.8, and I went back to 4.79, which lives happily ever after with the Aptiva.

I run 4.79 on a newer PC along with Mozilla, and Netscape 7, with no problems whatsoever. You know what "They" say: "if it isn't broken, don't fix it ".

Went back to 4.79 with absolutely no change in behavior.
Any other ideas on why Netscape is so slow especially with Netscape's own mail service and having to load the sign-in page twice?? THANKS FOR ANY INFO. SKEETF

    Hi SkeetF,

Sorry to hear that you are still having problems.

Are you keeping up with basic Preventive Maintenance for your Browser.
Do you mean the "Welcome to Netscape" page that appears when you open the Messenger Window, or are you talking about entering your password?

Let us know, and we can go from here.

I'm not having trouble with my regular Netscape browser e-mail with Bellsouth.net, but rather with the free e-mail from Netscape.com, ie: Netscape Network (...@netscape.net).
The "screenname, verify password page" loads then disappears and reloads a second time taking about 45 sec to a minute before I can enter my password. When I use IE I can enter my password in 5 seconds.
Most websites load quickly; there are some that load slower (than IE) and some that won't load at all.
I do regular maintenance on my browsers and all my temp files about everyday. I run scandisk and defrag once a week. I have no problems with IE 6.0 sp1 except for pop-ups. SKEETF
