Since changing my ADSL router to a Netgear DG834Gv4 no PC on my LAN has been able to obtain the time from any of several NTP servers on the internet. I have tried specifically opening port 123 for UDP on the outgoing firewall with logging turned on, but whilst the requests get logged, I never receive a response. I have been trying for a few months now.

Everything else is working perfectly, including access to equipment on non-standard TCP ports (which required no special rules in the ADSL router firewall).

I'm getting nowhere slowly with Netgear tech support. Does anyone know why this ADSL router is blocking all responses from NTP servers?

You will need to use Port Forwarding to make NTP work.

IMHO, NTP on a pc is a waste unless the pc is running a server operating system. The bios clock is very accurate, if not, change the motherboard battery. I always disable the Windows Time service. To do so you must FIRST double click the clock in system tray > Internet Time tab > uncheck, then Control Panel > Admin tools > Services > disable Windows Time. Adjusting the time via the clocl applet automaticaly sets the time service to Automatic unless the service is set to disabled.

Hmmm - I've always found PC clocks in general drift quite badly, and look especially poor now that radio controlled clocks are common place.
