Hi! I'm absolutely at my wits end. I D/L 7.02 on Monday and used it until Wednesday night with no hitches. I ran into problems with programs not responding so I had to restart, then had to reboot. When I came back up Netscape would only send and receive email - it will not connect to the net via any of my bookmarks, links in emails or by typing in the addy in the URL box. When I open it I can't get my home page which is my server. No matter what address I try to get, the message is the same. Alert. The connection was refused when attempting to contact www. whatever. In the last 2 days I have deleted 3 programs which were acting up in case that was the problem .(auctionsubmit, popupstoppers and adsubtract) I downloaded 7.02 again but the same thing happened. Then I blew away 4.78 and 7.02 in case they weren't playing nice, got 7.02 again - still no go. Today I removed 7.02, did a complete scandisk, a defrag and loaded it up again. I'm still getting the same message. I can only use it for mail. I have checked to make sure that it is set as my default browser and that html is enabled etc. Nothing is helping!!!! I no longer have a firewall program, but do have Nortons 2003 and am using Win98SE. there appears to be email support in the 7.02 help menu but I can't access it because I just get the Alert message. That page does not seem to be on the Netscape site and I can't find a link to email help there. I'm absolutely stumped!!!!!!

Hi again.......just noticed that busybee seemed to have the same problem. If I'm reading it right it was solved by downloading 7.02 again. I have already done this 3 times and it is very time consuming.......should I just give in and do it again? :)

    Hi hamburgerpatty

    Welcome to the Forums

I'm alittle confused by your "Alert" message referring to "http://www. This is not a proper URL. Are you inputting this as an complete URL or is something "strippping" out the true URL value. Example.. the complete URL for this thread on the forum is .....
    http://www.windowsbbs.com/showthread.php?s=&postid=79124#post79124
I hope I'm not "insulting" your knowlege of "Internet" if I misunderstood your question. When you post back we can do some "should be" settings and take it from there.

Hi Dennis: Sorry I didn't make myself more clear. On opening the browser, the message is ....refused when attempting to contact www.kos.net (my server) I contacted them - it isn't their problem. When I try a bookmark, it is .....refused when attempting to contact www. whatever the addy in the bookmark is - same thing if I try a clickable link in an email. thanks ! Patty

    Hi hamburgerpatty

I tried your site and it downloaded fine. I'm still alittle confused is this a site(s) problem or you can NOT connect to ANY site. But lets start the basics..

    Check this.... GoTo.......
    Edit| Preferences| Advance--Expand| select... Proxies
Have a tick in radio button "Direct Connection to Internet
    (ONLY IF USING BROADBAND CONNECTION)

    Check this... GoTo
    Edit|Preferences|Privacy & Security|Cookies
Select: Enables cookies for originating web site only.

    Check this.... GoTo.......
Edit| Preferences| Advance--Expand| select ..... Scripts and Plugins. ALL entries should have a tick, EXCEPT no tick for "Mail and Newsgroup ".

Please use "Modern" for theme choice

Close / reload Netscape... try surf'in
    Post back with results

Hi Dennis: No matter what site I try, I get the same message. I can't get onto the net at all with the browser although the send & receive email is working. I checked all those preferences and they were already set as you had laid out. Netscape is also set as my default browser. Ain't this weird :) I can do anything I want on IE, which is how I'm able to post here.

    Hi hamburgerpatty,

Do you run a Firewall? Turn off your Firewall and see if you are able to browse.

If you use a web accellerator, or cache utility, turn them off.

Do you use a HOSTS file?

Re enable each of the above, if applicable, one at a time to determine if any of them are inhibiting your browsing.

Hi - the only thing I have is Nortons 2003 - the settings that I see only have to do with virus scanning, nothing about a firewall. I can't access Norton's help because I can't open the program - it tries to connect to the net and I get the Alert message. I doubt I'm using any of the features you mention unless they are default settings somewhere. I go plain vanilla whenever possible. Win 98SE and a browser and I'm usually good to go :)

    hamburgerpatty,

Sorry that I missed, in your first post, that you didn't have a firewall. You should be able to open your Norton AntiVirus program offline? Not sure what's up with that.

I would advise Creating a New Profile, and see if that solves your inability to connect to any websites.

Hi Ramona: I'll try that. I can open Norton's to look at it, but to access help it tries to connect to the net :(

Hi Ramona: I just printed out the instructions for creating a new profile.....I hate to say it, but it looks rather beyond me, but I'll see if I can follow along. I rarely ever mess with default settings, except very straightforward ones where I know exactly what I'm making the change for. If I fritz this up somehow, am I running the risk of being worse off? If I mess up something in IE, I won't have a browser at all!

    hamburgerpatty,

You will not be changing any default settings. The Netscape Profile creation is within the Program. It will have absolutely NO effect on IE.

Follow the guideline one step at a time. Don't be overwhelmed by trying to absorb the entire guideline at once.

Most importantly, back up your existing Profile before you begin.

    Post back with any questions.

    Hi hamburgerpatty

Check couple more thing before you start with the profile build.....
Edit| Preferences| Advance--Expand| select... System. On the top panel put ticks in the following... HTLM documents, XML documents, XHTML documents, XUL documents. On the bottom panel put ticks in ALL of the choices. (ftp is optional if you use 3rd party download program).
    Also... (Ramona do you agree?)
Goto... Edit| Preferences| Navigator| Helper Applications. You should be showing "text/html" under files types. After all changes are made, close / open Netscape. If these checks don't do it... it's profile time. Don't be spooked hamburgerpatty, Ramona has done this a 1000 times and has the patience of a saint. Follow her guidelines. You are in very capable hands.

    Dennis,

    You suggested:
Edit| Preferences| Navigator| Helper Applications. You should be showing "text/html" under files types.

I don't show anything here, other than the two MIME types I have added. Netscape uses Windows' Registered File Types?

To the rest of your suggestions I agree 100%.

Hi Dennis & Ramona: On the first part of your suggestion, everything is checked as you suggested. On the helper applications part - it doesn't look like what you are describing (I don't think). There are no options to choose, just a large empty box titled file types. Beside it are 3 buttons, new type, edit and remove. Under that is: extension MIME type: and Handled by. Only New type is enabled. When I click on new type, a message window comes up with 4 boxes to fill in. Description of type, File Extension, Mime Type, Application to use. I don't know what to type in these blanks.

    hamburgerpatty,

What you see in the Helper Applications is the default setting. Do nothing.

If all settings are as described by Dennis L and you are still unable to connect to any web page, then I suggest that you proceed with the New Profile.

Drat! I was hoping that all the blanks on the helper's page was the culprit. I'm off to see if I can make sense of the create a new profile :) THANKS!

    HP,

Just take it slow and easy. I'll stay with you all the way. Please ask questions if you aren't perfectly clear on what to do, as you progress with the new Profile.

Once you go through this process, you will see that it is quite simple, and only takes a few minutes. The first one is always the most overwhelming!

I'm practically hysterical here - I don't know whether to laugh or cry ........it just gets worse & worse :) I found the Profiles Folder and tried to back it up.....it filled a disk, asked for another one, then (after showing 44 minutes time remaining) sent a bit of data to the second disk, then I got a message to the effect that the file is very large and could I put in a larger disk. Sorry, but I don't remember the exact wording. At that point I started laughing hysterically...... I called a friend who uses his Profile Manager to get on the net because he has multiple email addys. He suggested I go online and try to get on from there. My profile manager screen shows only 1 profile KOS. When I highlighted it so that the launch Netscape 7.0 button would be enabled & tried that, I got this error message....Alert Netscape 7.0 cannot use the profile "KOS" because it is in use. Please choose another profile or create a new one. Next I decided to check my mail, but when I tried my Netscape icon for mail it gave me the same message. Now I don't have email anymore. This is just going from bad to worse! I would continue with trying to create a new profile, but I can't backup the old one. I think I may give in and try loading it again, but I don't want to delete it first - I'll lose all my mail & bookmarks etc if I do, right?
