I want to setup wireless on my new Acer Aspire laptop with Windows8. However there is not any documentation as to how-to. So, all that is shown is wireless networking Wi-Fi 802. Do I need to buy a router and what is recommended? If so, this should have the setup necessary for a connection. If Acer has things ready for wireless, how to get started using the networking is the question. Is there a button or switch for the wireless use? The purpose of getting the laptop was to use it as wireless. I do have a desktop using XP with internet connection. Please help me out here. Thanks,

A wireless router connected to your Internet service is required to make a wireless connection. If it is just you or just a couple of devices connecting, you can get an inexpensive router at your local big box store.

But you really don't need one to set up the wireless networking. Once it's working it will show you a list of SSIDs that you could connect to (your neighbors, etc) if you had the proper credentials - or you could go to a coffee shop or library that has free wifi.

Control Panel > All Control Panel Items > Network and Sharing Center > Set up a New Connection will get you started.

To all who responded, I thank you wholeheartedly. I have read each and every one and I am making progress.
First off the model given is E1-531-4682. Cannot find a thing relating to that number so I just went with Acer Aspire laptop when searching for info. The users manual on the computer is a general Aspire manual which applies to all Acer laptops. Duh! I feel that using a router may be the answer to all this.
I did learn there is a FN(function) key which goes along with the F-keys but thereto, nadda. I tried going the route of not getting a router. However all the networks showing, need a password. Back I go therefore, to buying a router and setting up my own network with a password.
Got the router which described exactly how-to and had one heck of a time getting it setup but yes, yes I did. And I did walk to another part of the house with my laptop and did connect to the internet.
Quite a learning experience which could have been avoided if Acer had just mentioned that most networks have passwords, so buy a router.
Now to get on with Windows 8. Thanks again to all windowsbbsers.

Sometimes one need just take a plunge and pray the current isn't too swift.
It sounds as though you didn't drown!
