I have a Deskjet 920c for which I need to download a driver.
My OS is Vista Home Premium Service Pack 2.

This computer is never put online the Internet. I have searched online but the only drivers I have found require a scan, a separate driver installer program, or some other method that requires connecting to the Internet.

I have been to some Microsoft web pages related to this printer/OS combination and have read that the driver is included in my Windows Vista program and that there is no need to download a driver.

When I connect the printer via usb, a text pops up with a menu of chioces, I have selected 'Allow Windows to locate and install the driver.' Eventually a message is displayed which tells me the printer has been installed and is ready to use. But it never works. Incidentally the printer does work on another OS (not windows).

What am I missing here and how can I solve this without putting this computer online?

    Thanks for any help!

Hi Ed B, Using the comp you're on the Internet with, why don't you visit HP and Download and SAVE the drivers to your Desktop.
You will have to get the Drivers for your Vista OS (32 or 64bit).

From your Desktop, you should be able use a USB thumb drive to move the drivers to your Vista comp and install them.
If your HP 920c is recognized in Device Manager, you can install through there. Neil.

Why not let the Vista machine go online and update itself, Ed?

Just a thought - is your HP 920c set as the Default Printer? Neil.

Thanks for your response. but with all due respect, that is precisely what I have been trying to do. The trail ends with the following message. "The Driver for Your Product Is Included in the Windows Vista Operating System ".

There must be a way, but I've not found it.

It was, but I tried following Microsoft's instructions re, What to do if the driver is not automatically installed, and it has now been deleted.

I shut the computer down and rebooted. The 'Found new hardware' message didn't pop up but the 'Installing device driver software' icon appeared. When I clicked on the icon it gave me menu again and I selected to have windows search for the driver. This ended up with this message:
Windows found driver software for your device but encountered an error while attempting to install it.
    and - - - - - - - - - - The system cannot find the file specified.

It contains some very important data that I want to preserve and I have reason to believe the system has been compromised via some sort of malware.

Long story short, I just don't trust the systems security.

Some of the errors you are encountering may be related to malware corruption.

I am now able to print!

I found a solution that worked but doesn't seem logical to me.

I deleted all instances of the 920c (2), went to control panel, executed Install printer, and selected 'Add a local printer'.

The part that isn't logical is the instruction under the menu option for adding a local printer.
“Use this option only if you don't have a USB printer. (Windows automatically installs USB printers when you plug them in.)â€

Windows didn't automatically install a driver for my printer! And isn't my 920c a USB printer?

Another part that leaves me scratching my gray hair is having to select the option to install a 'local printer' and selecting a 'virtual USB port' for the connection.

At last I am able to print and was able to do it without connecting to the Internet.
Thanks to all for your responses. I only hope that someone will find something helpful in all of this.

Just curious. What happened to the printer software installation disk that came with the printer?

The printer was given to me without the disk so I never had one.
