I live in a remote area and need to find a better internet service provider. There is no cable in this area. My local phone company has what they call high speed internet over the phone line. The connection speed will slow down to about dial up speed, or less, when it gets busy. I can tell when the school buses drop off all the kids from school. The fastest speed package they offer is 1Gbps and that speed can only be reached after everyone else in the county has went to bed. They keep saying that they plan to upgrade their system, but they promised that 5 years ago and those of us that live out in the rural areas are still waiting.

My only other options are satellite or via a cel phone service.

The advertisements for satellite sound good, until you start reading the user reviews. Most of the reviews are very negative, poor speed and no customer support. Our area is also covered by weak cel phone signal strength. I would most likely need to use a cel phone signal boaster or a very high mounted external antenna to get a good connection.

Does anyone use either satellite or a cel phone provider for internet. If so, what has been your experience and satisfaction with either one.

Thank you for any comments or suggestions you can offer.

Hi Gordon, Rural is your answer/problem. It's pure economics and unless there is money to be earned by a Telco provider investing huge $'s - you are stuck with what you have.
You say you have very poor cellphone reception in your area - someone needs to spend big bucks to improve that!
Probably not what you want to hear, but the same complaints are voiced here in little old NZ. Our farmers have had to get together and support their own MicroWave system to improve their rural reception.
Where the greater population is is where it happens.

Thank you for the reply. I did some research and found out there is a new cell tower a few miles from our house, built withing the last 2 months. It has improved the signal greatly if connected to that cel provider. So I bought a new cel phone, set it up to use as a mobile hotspot. That was today, so I can not report any long term results. Testing through speedtest.net my mobile hot spot is about 6-10 times faster than the local phone company internet. If it continues that way for a while, I will buy a jet pack for my mobile hot spot. My internet will cost more but at least it will be usable.
There are both advantages and disadvantages to living in a rural area.

Lets hope you have found your answer even if it will cost a little more.
