Need to boot off CD for Windows XP Repair

My system is XP SP2 Home. I have been having problems with IE6SP1l
In viewing some miscellaneous forums, come to find out that I can do a REPAIR (not a re-install) of XP. I have the oringinal MS XP CD. I understand that I need to boot from the CD and follow some steps to get to Repair.

How do I get my machine to boot from CD. Do I have to do anything to BIOS or something else? Can the simple-to-understand get me into the CD where I can access REPAIR.
I did an install over the present XP on my system, but that didn't help anything.

So, my request is to spell it out in a step-by-stem procedure. Also, I need to ask wil this repair "fix" my IE?
I did an IEFix, but that didn't help either

This is basically what a 'repair' install is, what steps did you use to attempt this? I don't believe this was successful because of your question about how to boot from the XP disk. (That's a necessary step in a repair install, this cannot be done from 'inside' Windows)
What kind of problems are you having with IE6? Do you have some kind of malware/adware problem that can be corrected without doing a repair install? There are several step-by-step guides for doing a repair install on XP, but you may have a problem that can be taken care of without doing the repair. Please post information about the problem you are having. Give the board a chance to correct your problem before resorting to doing the 'repair'.

Run "iexplore /rereg" (no quotes - note spacing)
This will re-register the DLL's in IE under SP2 only.

My computer contains: Athlon 3200gb, 1 gig Ram, I have WinXP SP2 Home, and IE 6 SP1. I have a cable ISP and the download speeds (which just tested) vary from 2500 kbps to 3000kbps.

When I click on a link in my OE e-mail, I am immediately taken to the web-site. When on a web-site, and I click on a link within the site, it takes "forever" to download the page....I watch the green progress bar, not much happens. It says "done ", but I still have to wait a long time for the page to download. I click the F5 key to refresh and still it takes a long time for the page to download.

I've checked for malware (AdAware, SpyBot, MS anti spyware, ewido, a-squared ,and CCleaner......no malware), I ran a system scan for viruses (AVG and then TrendMicro Housecall....no viruses), I cleaned out cache, Temp files and cookies. I ran Repair Registry Pro and it didn't help either.
I also ran Start>Run: typed in: sfc /scannow with my original Win XP CD and this didn't help. I also did "IE Fix ".... didn't help either.

This problem occurs with e-mails from PCMag.com; Lockergnome.com; AllExperts.com, and many others. A link within one of these e-mails when I click on the link takes a very long time to download. (usually from 90 to 120 seconds).

I still need to know how to boot with my XP CD to do a Repair, if U guys
determine that this is the only way to eliminate long download times. How do I accomplish this (this is where I need the step-by-step instructions)?

I did a Start>>Run>> typed in: regsvr32 urlmon.dll and then repeated this with the following items typed in one by one:
Regsvr32 shdocvw.dll’
Regsvr32 oleaut32.dll
Regsvr32 shell32.dll
Regsvr32 actxprxy.dll
Regsvr32 mshtmll.dll
Each was "successfulâ€

Work your way down to "How to Repair Install "
First thing you are going to have to do is get into your Bios and change the machine to boot from the CD. Save and exit.
Have the XP CD in the drive and when it boots up it will ask if you want to boot from the cd "hit any key" click on the enter key. Let it do it's thing you will get to the options on the pictures from the above link. It will reboot at some point "don't hit any key" the next time just let it do it's thing.
Follow any instructions you get during the install. Those pictures on the link will help way better than trying to explain.

Did you ever do the fix I posted for IE in SP2? Apparently it isn't IE or that would work.

I don’t know how to get into Bios and what to do with this. After this is done, and I somehow can boot with CD, then how would I get my Bios back to where it presently is and should be? Or, if I don’t have the CD in my D: drive, do I assume the a normal boot-up would occur??

Maybe I ought to just accept the slow downloads, if as U say that "apparently is isn’t IE "…then what could it be?? I did do the fix U recommended. How can I determine the cause of my problem that I originally posted?

 

First... ignore #1. Next, place your Windows CD in the drive and restart your computer. The message "To boot from the CD, press any key" should appear on your screen (press any key). If you don't get this message and the computer continues to 'boot' into Windows you will have to restart your computer again and enter the BIOS to change the 'boot order'. (Leave your Windows CD in the drive)
To enter the BIOS, the first screen you see when you restart your computer should offer the option to enter 'Setup' (BIOS) by pressing DELETE (or on some computers it's the F1 or F2 key). Once you've entered setup, look for an option called 'Boot', here you can set the boot order. Change the option to where your CD drive is first on the list. Select the option to 'save the changes' and 'exit'. The computer will then restart and should offer the option 'To boot from CD, press any key'. Then follow the instructions in the tutorial Maggie provided. HTH

I have been hesitant in going into the BIOS. Also, I didn't see the screen that U described....I don't get an option to enter Setup.
Fortunately, I thought....in today's Lockergnome, it contained an article on BIOS, so I thought I am "home-free "...but no!!! Here is what I copied/pasted:

The simplest way to begin a clean install of Windows is to start your computer using the Windows XP CD. When the computer restarts a message will briefly appear on the screen prompting you to press any key to boot from the CD. If this message does not appear, it may mean that you need to configure the BIOS to boot from a CD.

The BIOS setup settings can be modified using the BIOS CMOS setup program. This program is available at system startup be pressing a specific key such as F10.

Unfortunately there is no one set of steps to do this because the BIOS settings vary from computer to computer. You will need to check your computer manual or motherboard documentation for the exact steps you need to complete to enable your computer to boot from a CD. In any case, once you are in the BIOS setup program, you will want to look for a setting that allows you to define the boot order. The CD-ROM device should be listed first. Then save your settings and restart the computer.
I have a SOYO Motherboard SY-KT600 Bragon Plus v2.0 and I don't know what to do with it.

 

I had the exact same thing happen to me not long ago and it turned out that my firewall was messed up. When I turned it off for a test everything worked fine. I've since changed firewall's and all is well.

Another problem like this cropped up before that and that turned out to be the cable modem. MY ISP replaced it with a new one and all was well once again.

You do not boot from the WindowsCD but you probably will need it to run the repair. Also stay by the PC, since you may have to click Retry several times. Procedure takes about 20 minutes or more.
P.S. I did not read all the earlier posts in detail, so forgive me if I repeated what someone else has said.

I use MS Firewall. I have problems with a few sites for long time downloading. Most of the sites, most of the links in my e-mails work quickly.
So, my feeling is the the Firewall or Cable Modem is not my problem

I think I tried this procedure (ie.inf) before, but just to make sure, I ran it just now (with the XP CD in D: drive)
When I located ie.ing it tells me that the file is in: C:\windows\inf
I right-click ie.inf (the CD in D and the default location is:
C:\windows\inf\1386 doens't work. I click the down arrow and have the following choices: D:\windows\inf\1386 doesn't work
D:\windows\inf doesn't work
D:\1386 and this works
Restart computer.....no difference in download time
Maybe problem lies elsewhere. I am about to give up and live with problem

It was method #1, sfc /scannow, that I was suggesting.

(not only have we had balmy weather this past wee, BUT we will continue this coming week---we'll hit 61º)
I have done the ie.inf and also the sfc /scannow
neither of these methods have inproved the download times (at least for Lockergnome.com, PCMag.com, and About.com
Meanwhile, links that I get in my e-mail download very quickly; as well as m any sites that have links within the site.
So....????

 

princessmandi8--If the slow loading of links is limited to only those sites, then perhaps it was/is server problems at their end. Nothing you can do about that, except wait for them to fix it **. Have you tried again today?
I just went to PCMag.com and was able to link very quickly.
Strange performance at a limited number of sites usually is not a problem caused by IE.

** I suppose a firewall could cause selective slowness in accessing depending on the site. You have nothing to lose by disabling your firewall for a few moments to try. But be sure to reactivate. And do you by any chance have a third party firewall running? If so you may have two firewalls running since WinXP SP2 installs Windows Firewall by default. You do not want two firewalls running. Disable Windows Firewall (Control Panel|Windows Firewall). It is not as good as third party firewalls, anyway.

I disabled the MS Firewall and accessed PCMag.com; AllExperts.com and Lockergnome.com and all these sites behaved the same as when Firewall was "ON ". I have Firewall "ON" again.
NO...I don't have any other firewall installed. (I was advised that since I have a wired router....Linksys....and have MS Firewall, I shouldn't install Zone Alarm.
