[Resolved] Need some help with malware HJT log included

I'm trying to help a friend of my son with his PC. When I got it, there were pop-ups on it all the time, even sitting idle at the desktop. He didn't have any Anti-spyware software on it and the Antivirus software was a trial version of AVG which had expired a while back.


What I've done so far:

I was able to install Spyware Blaster and Avast Antivirus, but neither would update, kept getting errors trying to find the server. Neither Spybot or MalwareBytes Antimalware would install, even changing the installer file name.

I took the hard drive out and put it in one of my PC's and scanned it with MalwareBytes and with Avast. Both found a bunch of stuff and removed it. I then put the drive back into his case, and was successful in installing Spybot and MalwareBytes and getting everything except MalwareBytes to update (I tried all the mirrors listed on the update tab, just sits there trying to connect).

I scanned with Spybot, MalwareBytes (even with the old definitions) and Avast, again a bunch of stuff was removed. I'm attaching the logs from both MalwareBytes and Avast scans in case they are needed.

With everything done so far, the PC is much better than when I got it. The pop-ups are gone and I'm able to get online with it (doing a Kaspersky online scan now). I'm posting the HJT log here as I'm sure there is more stuff lurking as bad as this machine was.

Hi Bill

Download ComboFix by sUBs from here, saving the file to your desktop.


Please disable realtime protection applications as they sometimes interfere with the tool. Check this link for your applicable programs.

• Close all open programs and windows
• Double click combofix.exe and follow the prompts.
• It may reboot your computer and resume running when you logon. Wait for it to complete. When finished, it will open a log for you. Post that log and a new HijackThis log in your next reply.

Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while its running. That may cause it to stall


Go ahead and post that Kaspersky log too, if you saved one.

One item left to nuke from the Kaspersky scan.

Fix the following with HijackThis.

And traces of a rogue service to remove. Paste the following into the Start>Run dialog then hit Enter.

sc delete PlugPlayRPC

Reboot and run another scan with HJT to see if the following line is still present.

If still there, try this command and check again.

sc delete RPC

Open MBAM and remove any items quarantined. Do the same with the resident antivirus and Spybot.

Click Start>Run and type ComboFix /u then hit Enter to uninstall ComboFix and remove the files it has quarantined. This action will also reset the System Restore points, removing any infected files there as well.
Verify the C:\Qoobox and C:\ComboFix folders were removed, as well as the C:\ComboFix.txt file.
You can delete any other logs that were created/saved too.

Run ATF Cleaner to clean out temps, TIFs, cookies and recycle bin. Let me know how things are when done.

I did everything listed in your post. The machine definitely seems to be running better now. There is one thing I noticed, after running Combofix the first time, the little Avast globe no longer appears in the system tray. I checked the settings in the program and it is set to be there. Any suggestions on how to fix that?

Navigate to and double click the following file to see if it puts the tray icon back.

If that does it, create a reg file with the contents of the code box below then merge it.

Very odd that entry went missing. It doesn't show as one removed in the CF log.

That fixed it, not sure what happened but it's working like it should again. The machine seems to be a lot better now. I'm going to put on Comodo before I return it, and provide some instructions on how to keep the spyware and antivirus programs up to date and run scans. Thanks for the help, much appreciated.
