D.Matura--I have seen several people with the problem and believe the solution involves a change in the Registry. However, before doing that, click IE Tools|Help|About Internet Explorer. Do you see SP-1 on the line "Update Versions "? If not, you do not have IE6 SP1 installed.

    I/E SP-1 update

The version showing ends 6011 which is the "old version" and NOT SP-1, but that is just my problem! The update I'm useing is a CD from microsoft that is labeled: Internet Exployer 6.0 SP-1 update but after install it keeps showing the "old version number" and will not let me install any SP-1 updates as it keeps coming back with this update requires SP-1....Den..............

    I/Eneeds to have SP-1

This is exactly what I/E shows:

    Version 6.0.2800.1106IC
    Cipher Strength: 128 Bit
    Product ID: 55736-412-0574014-04747
    Update Version; SP-1; Q822925; Q330994; Q240308; Q313829;
This is a Customized Version of I/E

Guess I quoted the wrong ending numbers of I/E version in earlier post so sorry fer that but still keep getting "you need SP-1 for this update or security fix whichever one it states whan I'am trying to apply it....Den..............

    Just some thoughts.

    From your last post.

This is a Customized Version of I/E

This may be the answer. It may not be a Microsoft version. Or not designed for XP.

Are you sure that the CD came from Microsoft and/or was designed for XP ?

    I have re-installed SP-1 and tried "repair

I did not think there was an IE install or repair available in XP as there is in 98.

I thought IE was all part of the OS install AGAIN And all updates had to come form the Windows Uppdates.

    Right now my IE shows

    Version 6.0.2800.1106.xpsp2.030422-1633

    I/E SP-1

Yup, it came directly from M/S and they answered the phone that way when I called the orderin.
When ever I tried to use the CD to re-install my only choice was repair.....
In add/remove I could remove and revert to previous version.
In XP-SP-1 only thing I guess I ever tried was to re-install by CD and then the choice was repair.......

This is a Customized Version of I/E

Somehow I do not think that belongs there. I have never seen in on a version of IE that came right from MS.

But wait to see what others may have to say.

    Question.

By any stretch on my imagination did you install any software from your ISP ? Customized Version would fit there.

D.Matura--The info you have supplied about your Help|About IE window shows IE6's SP1 is installed. Not sure what you mean by "after install it keeps showing the "old version number" ". The IE version number you indicate (IE version 6.0.2800.1106IC) is the most recent, though I cannot comment if you have all the latest patches, since I do not run XP.
Are you sure that message about SP1 needing to be installed does not refer to WindowsXP rather than IE?
IE in WinXP can be "repaired ", though I shudder to have to try to follow the directions
    http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;318378
Since you seem to be able to speak to MS (and have ordered that CD from them and therefore may be owed some free support), have you asked them for help on this issue? As mentioned, others have this problem and would love to learn the fix.
BillyBob--I do not think "This is a Customized Version of I/E" is an issue. This is the way my Help|About IE reads, too. My IE6 came from the Windows Update site as did many patches. I cannot remember when "This is a Customized Version of I/E" first showed up. Maybe it was always there.

D.Matura--I am not trying to prolong your agony, but I think you should email MS about this. They, believe it or not, offer free tech support by email on the Windows Update site for problems specific to Windows Update.
And cannot remember if I have mentioned the Windows Update Troubleshooter
    http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/troubleshoot/
