I wish to set up a kiosk like computer which can use our small business's network to get to the Internet. I don't want users to run programs on the computer and I don't want users to be able to get into our network. I want to be able to demonstrate Internet use. We have a single DSL connection for about 10 computers. The computers all run XP. Is there a way to do this?

    easily done:
    0. log on as admin and create a general user account, give it a username such as "public ".
    1. in the properties for Local Area Network for this computer, remove File & Printer Sharing.
    2. set permissions for user account "public" using Computer Management. (rt click My Computer iicon on desktop and select Manage.
    3. logoff as admin and logon as public.
    4. good to go.

step 2 will require many steps, such as "setting program access ", what icons are visible when logged on as "public ", what programs can be run (will need a browser at least), etc etc etc. Best to disable Control panel for user "public ", disable "Internet Options" in Internet Explorer, prevent installation of programs, disable access to registry, disable removable media drives such as floppy & cd/dvd drives. In essence, make user "public" so restricted that all he can do is use IE and basic functions like run a few apps like Notepad, Wordpad, etc.

In XP pro, you can use the program called gpedit to control what users can and cannot do, or can use a 3rd party app that consolidates and simplifies setting up a kiosk computer such as Win Control:

You could also simply turn on the guest account, disable file sharing, and that should have the same effect as creating a whole new account.
