My grandmothers computer is running very slow. She has a brand new Dell Dimension Desktop but only has 128 RAM. I ran a computer check up and it reccomended that she has 256 to allow her system to operate smoothly and efficiently. Is this how to solve the problem, by installing more RAM? Her applications take a long time to open and generally all computer operations require the computer to "think" a lot. Any reccomendations on types of RAM for this computer? Thanks in advance!

Microsoft recommend 128 MB as an absolute minimum for XP and some manufacturers obviously sell the budget computers with that small amount of RAM. In some cases, it is also shared with the integrated video which leaves the operating system with less than 128 MB.

The "sweet spot" for XP is 512 MB. Up to that amount, it is money well spent. Above 512 MB the average user doesn't detect an improvement.

I would add at least 256 MB to get 384 MB total RAM. If it is shared with integrated video, I would consider adding 512 MB.

We need the specific model number to be able to find out which type of RAM and if it is shared.

    Hi Tar,

I agree with Christer. For some UNKNOWN reason, MS states 128 megs but I would not even run Win98SE with only 128 megs of ram.

Go to http://www.salescircular.com and check out what is on sale in your area.
