    I need major help. Yesterday afternoon, i installed a program from a cd a friend let me borrow. When i got home from work, my computer was acting very weird. i installed a virus program, NsWorks 2003. After rebooting, the computer, NAV, said i had quarantined "backdoor.optixpro.12" virus. But now i couldn't access any files (*.exe), none, only indirectly. I can open IE 5.5 directly, but not Word 2k (only by clicking on *.doc files). i tried going onto Norton.com, but to no avail, its a trojan horse. I tried restoring the registry, i did, but now clicking on each executable, i get (looking for winampw.exe, which was the quarantined virus). I cant acces the registry since its an executibles, nor NAV. How can i restore the usage of executibles and ultimately use all my programs. I can even access information from a cd. What can i do? Help please...

    Did you do all the steps Symantec (Norton) recommend Here?

    Here is how to get Regedit to run. Open a dos window and type this in:

    ren regedit.exe regedit.com <enter>

    Close dos window. This will rename the file from a exe to a com, so it will run [This will not work so well with registered programs]. When you get done down below, open the dos window and type this in;

    ren regedit.com regedit.exe <enter>

    Then go to Start\Run and type in regedit and press enter. You are going into the registry. You will need to click on + signs in the left pane until you get here;
    HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\exefile\shell\open\command
    Look to the right pane, you will see a value named Default.
    It should only say this;
    "%1" %*
    it might look like
    " "%1" %* "
    If it says winampw.exe after that, right click on Default and choose Modify, put the cursor at the end, and backspace until winampw.exe is gone, make sure you do not erase the *, then press enter, close regedit and reboot.
