    One review on the subject
    http://www.safer-networking.org/en/articles/download-managers.html
I see your post on the HiJackThis file forum. Whenever you download a program, you should scan with anti-virus before opening. And then with a spyware detector after installing. I would also suggest you install SpywareBlaster on your PC. The above review mentions that many download managers come with viruses/spyware.
Or you can make your own download manager.

At least you will not have to worry about spyware, but this procedure will not permit an interrupted download to resume on reboot.

Thanks Jim.....I didn't know that these types of programs came with Spyware.

As for making my own DM.....Does it matter what the OS is? i.e. W98se, XP?
Edit: I have been using SpyWare Blaster for some time now.....Great program.

I also have been using MS AntiSpyWare here of late.

James Martin--Sadly, you have to be suspicious of almost everything you download these days, including download managers!! (Even programs you pay for, but especially "freeware ". You pay for a lot of freeware by accepting the spyware.) However, some of the download managers reviewed in the safer-networking articles seem safe.
The Scream article suggests it is the version of IE that determines whether you can make the suggested changes--not the version of Windows. I have not tried this tweak, so would definitely recommend you back up the keys in the Registry so you can restore if you want to.

    Hi James,

I can thoroughly recommend MetaProducts Download Express. I have been using it for about three years now with no problem. It's free, has no spyware buried in it, and can be set to use your virus scanner on the download.

    Roger :)

I tried the tweak, and it made my browser faster....Comes in handy with dialup!

I made a backup of the registry, just in case.

Haven't downloaded much yet, but I think it helped in that area too.

Also installed the download manager (Download Express)....Seems to work ok with the tweak so far.
