My CD\DVD writer died. I have looked in local stores for a replacement with an IDE connection, but can't find any. Can anyone point me in the right direction?
I need a replacement urgently. It appears they are no longer available. What can I do? Any help will be appreciated.

    You can still get them.
Newegg.com and Superbiz.com are 2 popular online retailers that have 'em.
Here's a quick search at Newegg Newegg IDE CD/DVD burners

ps Just did a search for a model I have. Samsung SH-S222A. New ones showed up at both ebay and amazing (amazon.com).

Thanks, ephemarial and SVEN. I do not use ebay. As this is the first online purchase for me, I would be more comfortable with purchasing from Amazon. ephemarial, would you tell me how long you have had the Samsung and how you rate it? TIA!

Thanks, Tony - Do DVD Burners require drivers? I found one I can buy locally, but they say they do not include driver software.

I will check out your link.

    Hi
Have had 2 of the Samsungs for just over 2 years without any problems. Would recommend them.

Since you’re new to online purchases will toss in a few things.

    The Biggie.
Seems like QC by manufactures, probably to save money, has gone downhill.
So getting defective products happens, even with super name brands.

Check return policies – the usual is for you to pay shipping back (even though got defective product) they’ll pay for replacement shipping back

For refunds – you’ll be charged 15% restocking fee.

After 30 days the warranty is between you and the manufacturer.
Seems like those are the general terms.

Forgot about TigerDirect that Tony listed – excellent store. Have bought many things from them as well as Newegg, Superbiiz, eBay and of course Amazon.

About Amazon. When buying you’ll notice that some things are sold directly by them. Others aren’t and they just play middle man; collecting your payment and forwarding it. Complaints are first handled by you talking to whoever filled the order. So check if order being filled by Amazon or someone else – then look at sellers ratings.

Same thing with eBay. With eBay set up PayPal account to pay. You can use the PayPal account to pay almost everywhere online – including Amazon and all stores mentioned.

Wow - that was a lot of typing.

YES - require drivers. Windows will find the drivers. Just install the drive.
AND look at back of old drive- they'll be a series of pins with a black or blue jumper across 2 of them. Lettering will say CS, (cable select) M (master) S (slave). Place jumper on new drive in same place.

If not sure and buying locally - bring the old drive with you and ask someone.
    :)

Sorry to report that the seller did not have the Samsung DVD drive that I set out to purchase. However, they sold me a LiteOn iHAP422 which they confirmed was IDE. Even took my computer so they could check out that it would match.

Got it installed and in Device Manager it appears with a Warning (yellow shield).
When I right-click it and select Properties I get this message:

Windows cannot start this hardware device because its configuration information (in the registry) is incomplete or damaged. (Code 19).

This is the same thing that happened with the Memorex burner that I purchased last week.

Can anyone tell me what I can do? TIA!

ephemarial - I can't thank you enough for all your help! The FixIt did indeed Fix the problem.......not only with the new drive but with my old drive as well. I never checked in Device Manager when I thought my old drive died because it has been very nosy for quite a long while so I assumed it was kaput. I will keep my old one as a spare drive.

Your help was invaluable to me and I will save the notes regarding online shopping for future reference. I appreciate your taking the time and trouble to give me instructions as how to do so.

hawk - Thanks to you too for the link and to everyone else who added their input.
