I got a call from a neighbor tonight in a panic because their AOL wasn't working and their kids need the internet for homework (must be the time of year or something). They said they were getting pop-ups, the machine would freeze after a few minutes on the net, and they were getting messages like 'Rundll32.exe encountered a problem and must be shutdown'. I had them bring the PC to me to go over. They have been using Spybot and Adaware (both were at the old release level) and Norton Antivirus 2003. The antivirus software was up to date, thank goodness. I ran a complete scan with Norton and it didn't find anything. I uninstalled both Spybot and Adaware and installed the current versions, updated them and ran scans. They both found a ton of stuff which I had them remove. I was able to get online with AOL without any problems and run an online virus scan with Housecall. It found two infected files which had to be deleted.

    I think the PC is pretty clean now, but I would like someone's opinion of the HJT log before I return it as being fit to use. This is a WinXP Home system. Here's the log, any help would be greatly appreciated;

You may want to print this out, or save it to text where you can access it in safe mode.

Download CWShredder from here. Save it to the desktop.

    Check for updates to Ad-aware.

They are or were using Kazaa. This is not technically malware by itself, but it installs malware in order to run properly and it opens the door for every other nasty program you can think of. I strongly recommend that you remove it. Read this article for alternatives that will provide some of the same function without the garbage: http://www.spywareinfo.com/articles/p2p/ If you opt to remove it, first use Add/Remove Program to remove it and any reference to Altnet and P2P Networking. Go to your control panel, then to add/remove programs...uninstall P2P networking...If/when asked whether you also want to remove Altnet components, say 'Yes'.
P2P Networking is a totally useless Kazaa add-on, and it's been reported to be responsible for serious system slowdowns. You may also want to run KazaaBegone to completely purge it from the system. Make sure to get the available LSPFix, just in case. Additionally, there is another new 'nasty' virus using P2P networks to spread itself. More here. Reboot when done.

Scan again with HijackThis and place a check next to the following remaining entries. Close ALL other windows and click fix.

Right click My Computer and choose properties. On system restore tab, check the box to turn off. OK out.

Go to start>run and type msconfig, hit enter. On the boot.ini tab, check the box next to /safeboot and OK. Yes to restart. This will restart your computer in safe mode. Logon to the Administrator account.

Now in safe mode, you will need to show hidden files and folders, as well as system files.

Open CWShredder, close ALL other windows and click fix.

    Open C:\WINDOWS and delete the files cfeerzx.exe, yfus.exe, 180ax.exe and qlajgl.exe.
Open C:\WINDOWS\system32 and delete the file ossproxy.exe.
Open C:\WINDOWS\system32 and delete the folders P2P Networking and pcs.
Open C:\Program Files and delete the folders Altnet, Kazaa, 411Ferret, SearchLocate, NaviSearch, INTERN~2(not the full name) and TV Media if present.
Open C:\Program Files\Common Files and delete the folder updater.
    Open C:\Program Files\Common Files\Real\Update_OB and rename realsched.exe to realsched.old
Open C:\Temp if present, select all and delete.
Open C:\Windows\Temp, select all and delete.
Open C:\Documents and settings\username\Local Settings\temp, select all and delete. Do this for all usernames.
Open C:\Windows\Prefetch, select all and delete.

Run Ad-aware in full scan mode. Delete all it finds.

Open My Computer, right click Local disk C: and choose properties, then disk cleanup. Check all boxes except compress old files and OK.
Uncheck the /safeboot box in msconfig and ok to reboot.

Back in windows, scan the PC with RAV. Check the box to autoclean. If any files are infected and uncleanable, click the report button then copy and paste it here, along with a new HijackThis log.

Wow, I guess it wasn't as clean as I thought. I'll follow your recommendations and post back when done. Thanks Dave.

    Dave,

It took me a while but I finally got through everything you suggested, Kazaa is gone (I had to use Kazaabegone to get rid of it), the cleanups in HJT are done, did the file cleanups, did another full Adaware scan, ran CWShredder and did the RAV online scan.

Here are the results of the RAV scan followed by the new HJT log. Let me know if you see anything else.

    Fix these with HJT.

    O3 - Toolbar: (no name) - {339BB23F-A864-48C0-A59F-29EA915965EC} - (no file)
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [inetmgr] C:\PROGRA~1\INTERN~2\inetmgr.exe
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [P2P Networking] C:\WINDOWS\System32\P2P Networking\P2P Networking.exe /AUTOSTART
    O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [MSMSGS] "C:\Program Files\Messenger\msmsgs.exe" /background

Then delete all the infected (and suspicious) C:\Windows and C:\Windows\System32 files.
Open C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Local Settings\Temp, select all and delete.
Open C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\IEService, and delete the v28.exe file (delete the whole IEService folder if nothing else in it).
Open C:\extract2\backups and delete the backup-20040923-162324-570.dll file.
    Empty the recycle bin.
Reboot and do another RAV scan and post the log, along with another HJT log. Assuming system restore is still disabled, if the RAV scan is clean, you can re-enable it.

Did you delete the INTERN~2 and P2P Networking folders?

    Dave,

    I deleted all the suspicious and infected files, deleted the additional entries you mentioned in HJT, emptied the temp folder, deleted v28.exe and the dll in the backup folder, and deleted internet keyboard(intern~2) and P2P networking. I ran another RAV scan which came up clean, so I turned on system restore. Here is the new RAV report and the HJT log;

    Again, thanks for the help

Looks good, with the exception of Windows Messenger.

    O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [MSMSGS] "C:\Program Files\Messenger\msmsgs.exe" /background

It's main use is by network administrators, to send messages throughout the network. It is a good source for popups and a security vulnerability on a home PC. Suggest you fix the entry, kill the msmsgs.exe process with task manager, then copy/paste the following command into the run box to uninstall it.

    RunDll32 advpack.dll,LaunchINFSection %windir%\INF\msmsgs.inf,BLC.Remove

You will most likely be given an error message, to which you just click OK. It will be removed anyway.

Then, if you haven't already done so, open Spybot and click mode on the toolbar, then advanced mode. Click immunize in the left pane, then immunize again, this time from above with the green + beside it. Click the link below that for SpywareBlaster, download, install and update. Check for updates weekly. Still in Spybot, click tools in the left pane, then click IE tweaks and at least lock the HOSTS file. Then download and install IESpyads.

That will give them an added layer of protection against unwanted parasites.

    Good work Bill. :)

    Dave,

I followed all your latest suggestions, the messenger removal worked just fine. I had already done the immunize in Spybot, it's one of first things I do after installing and doing the updates.

    Lonny,

Thanks for the add-on to Dave's response. I got rid of that also.

Thanks very much for the help on this, I think the machine is pretty clean now, it's at least running a whole lot better and surfing is a lot cleaner also. I think they have all the tools they need to keep it clean if they will just use them.

Thanks again guys, I really appreciate the help with this.

Glad to help Bill. :) Good to hear things are working better. A bit more optimization might be achieved by defragging and running a good registry cleaner now too.

    Dave,

I'm a little ahead of you this time. I did a defrag before I let the PC go back to them. They called and wanted to know if it was ready, so I let it go with some strong advice on how to keep it clean.

What registry cleaner do you recommend?

I like RegSeeker. I've never had any problems removing everything it finds.
