Need help with slow-running computer

I'm not sure if this is a spyware issue or not. When I am running one thing on my computer, it is very difficult trying to start up another program. If I am listening to music, if I do anything else (including simply minimizing the program) the music gets very choppy. Many times, Internet Explorer will freeze for a few seconds if there are other programs open at the same time. I've had spyware problems in the past, so I'm not sure if these would be related. Any help would be appreciated.
