Hello again to everyone. My problem today has to do with an old technology SCSI. I have rarely if ever been involved with it, but now I have.

My uncle gave me an old PC and told me all he wanted was to rescue the pictures off it. I thought OK easy, but when I opened the case I noticed it was SCSI.

Unfortunately the PC is very old and has no modern connections we take for granted today such as USB. I believe Win95 or Original Win98 is on there. I took the Adaptec SCSI card and transfered it to Dell which is only a few years old. XP recognized it right away and had the drivers for it. Once that was done I took the drives out of the old and connected with the cable to the Dell. It seems the Dell recognizes they are there but when I go to boot up the PC, it just stays at the XP Boot Screen and the bar just goes by and by without stoppping.

Is it possible the the system is trying to boot off them? I have the IDE drive as the default boot device. Also the SCSI cable used has 5 connectors. The 2 ends and 3 in between. It must have worked in the other PC, but I never turned it on. If someone could give me a refresher course in how is the way the two hard drives need to be connected and where the cable should be terminated I would appreciate it. :)

Finally, after XP was booted, I connected the cable to the SCSI card but nothing happens. XP never goes thru a Found New Hardware Wizard. The model of the Adaptec card is: AHA-2940/2940W PCI SCSI Card.

Thank you for any and all answers.

    Victor

I have only set up SCSI once or twice a long time ago.

    I found the manual
    http://www.adaptec.com/pdfs/installation_guides/aha2940_ig.pdf
but cannot get to the Adaptec downloads to see if there are drivers.

From memory(?), if the drive is set as 0 or 1, that signifies it is a boot drive, you may need to set it at 2 or higher if you are not booting from it.

Look at the Adaptec website for drivers.

It may be that it trying to boot to the drive, you will need to check in the BIOS/Startup settings that SCSI is not set before the boot drive. It is more likely that Windows does not have the correct drivers to run the card.
