I have Norton internet Security 2002 with Norton Anti Virus and it has been working just fine. The other day I went to check for "Live Updates" and got the following message:

The following Symantec products and components are installed on your computer.
    > LiveReg
    > LiveUpdate
    > Norton AntiVirus 2002
    > Norton AntiVirus Virus Definitions
    > Norton Internet Security URL updates
    > Norton Internet Security program updates
    > Norton Internet Security security updates
    > SARC Submission Software Updates
    > ScriptBlocking
    > SymEvent
    > Symantec Redirector

    Initializing...
    Connecting to liveupdate.symantecliveupdate.com...
    Unable to connect to host
LiveUpdate could not connect to your Internet Service Provider. Verify your dial-up information is correct.
    LiveUpdate session is complete.

I have DSL so there is no Dial-up necessary. Can't find any help from Symantec.

    Norton live update

Norton prodcuts are usually quite self-explanatory.
When you install it asks you a series of questions if you install
    in a custom fashion.
Norton will either automatically seek updates every time you
boot windows or can be set to check for updates every 4 hours of use - a waste of precious ram.
Look in the "Live update: configuration menus
Secondly if you go the Norton Antivirus "options" > "Liveupdate'
there are settings regarding whether to allow automatic updates.
As for Dsl I have cable and have no problems > set settings to
Lan if it is trying to do dialup (horrors).
At the very worst uninstall and reinstall in custom installation.
You will be given more options in setup.
Interestingly enough my son tells me taht after installation Norton needs two different updates to make the product current
but I guess on your second update it will pick that up anyway.
I used Outpost Pro previously as a firewall and found that I had to turn it off to allow liveupdate to connect. Norton is all integrated.
Lastly the major updates for Symantec are on Wednesday. There can emergency updates though with emergencies.
By the way does anyone know if Peter Norton is still involved with Symantec ?
    hope this helps
