    Hello all...

I had been advised by Netscape support that I could back up and restore me email by saving the mail folder to disk and then copying the files into the same directory after a crash or reformatting, etc...

This method did not work!!! It is also not possible to import the email into Outlook or Outlook Express. Does anyone know if there is a way to restore email in Netscape 6.2???

    Thanks...

    Welcome to the Forum!

    Hi oodie,

What type of media storage did you use for your mail folder?

If it was saved on CD:
Right click the file, select Properties
If "Read Only" has a tick beside it, then remove the tick.

Let us know if this might be the problem.

To import Netscape Mail to OE:
In Outlook choose to import Communicator email and when prompted for the location, give it the location of your 6.2 mail directory. I don't use OE so I don't know the exact procedure. At any rate, the INBOX in Communicator and 6.2 is the same type ascii text file without an extension.

    Ramona!!!

In case you didn't already guess... it worked!!! But... not only did I have to uncheck the "Read Only" box, but I also had to check the "Archive" box. I tried different things, but I never could get Outlook or OE to import the files. I kept getting an error message saying that the files were in use by another program, even though they weren't.

THANK YOU... THANK YOU... THANK YOU!!!

I will forever be indebted to you!!! I had important email that I could not afford to lose!!!

    Hi Judi,

That's great news, and you're most welcome!

I would re enable the "Archive ", as that should be the default.

As for exporting Mail to IE/OE:

You can always forward your NS mail to OE, if the files aren't too large.

I also found this workaround on a NG, and tried it myself. It works...

    1) Close all versions of Netscape completely.
    2) Open C:\Windows\Application Data\Mozilla\Profiles\yourprofile
name\xxxxxxxx.slt\Mail\ "the mail account name "
    3) Copy only the mail boxes not the msf files, and paste these items onto the desktop.
    4) Rename these boxes to unique mail folders names such as oldinbox6 or oldsent6
    5) Place these files into C:\Program Files\Netscape\Users\youruserename\Mail
    6) Next time you launch Netscape Communicator with that profile your
Netscape 6 mail should be in the containers with the names you
    specified.
    ---

When you import Netscape Mail from OE, you then can select Netscape Communicator from the list, and shouldn't encounter a problem. I can't try that for you, however, as I don't have OE. Here is MSKB Article Q242008 which explains the process.

A word of caution: back up your Profiles folder first before doing any editing.
